In the spirit of transparency I preface this review by disclosing that I am a family member of the proprietors of this property however I did not receive any compensation in return for a positive review. The observations and experiences discussed within are my own, presented wholeheartedly without bias or reservation.

My wife and I had the distinct pleasure of staying at the Wrangell Mountain Homestead for a wedding that took place on the same property. It’s an Inn and Cabin based lodging nestled in the valley between the Wrangell-St. Elias and Chugiak mountain range. What was once an abandoned, derelict, falling apart homestead is now a diamond in the rough as Ellyn and Casey are breathing life back into the property one cabin at a time. Not an easy task I might add. If you are thumbing your nose at the sight of the property, judging it as “down”, just know, it’s not going to be for very long.

Should you expect Shangri-La? No. 5-star accommodations? No. A weekend pampered spa resort? Absolutely not. So if that is what you are looking for, then this isn't where you want to be, plenty of other bougie spots out there. Perfectly okay, but if you are are wanting to experience authentic rustic Alaska? Here is the place. What you will get is a comfortable room or cabin, in Alaska, for a very reasonable price. We stayed in The Little House cabin. A very nice, quaint, clean, beautiful two bedroom one-half bath cabin. It had a comfortable bed, a perfectly working kitchenette, a nice wood stove (which we did not use) and yes, even hot running water and indoor plumbing – they aren’t that OLD authentic Alaskan. Blackout shades would be nice, especially for those who are not use to the almost twenty-some hours of daylight in the summer. However, with the windows cracked open at night, the nice cool crisp air will have you sleeping like a baby. No, you will not have a TV but why would you want one? No better place to disconnect and enjoy the peace and quiet. Fast Wifi is available for those of you who can’t stay away from social media.

For entertainment, we spent more than one evening out by the fire pit by the Big Hall, sitting around talking and enjoying time with others. Liberty Falls is a short drive away and even a shorter hike if you want to take in some gorgeous scenery. For the adventurous types, Ellyn and Casey can hook you up with some of the local hot spot tours.

I know I will be accused of bias simply due to the relationship with Ellyn and Casey. That’s fine. But I can’t help not recommend this place, it wasn’t what I expected and ended up being much, much more. I know I am going to be back there more than a few times as I enjoyed being there. For those looking for a good “base” to get out and really explore this great state, Wrangell Mountain Homestead is the place to be. Don’t let any of these other negative reviews sway you – some people cannot be pleased no matter what anyone does. Any issues, I know they will work it out with you.

This is truly a beautiful place, run by amazing people.

I stayed here for a couple weeks plus a bit more
The owner was ranting and raving one of the nights I was in the main house about getting a bad review.
The next night the house smelled like marijuana so bad I was worried my clothes would smell like that at work.
They have several rooms upstairs in the main house and the shower is shared as are the bathrooms.
I was moved to another cabin and there is no tv or basically anything but some mice nesting under the cupboards.
They take out the trash in the main house but you are expected to take it out if you are not in the main cabin.i told them I was working in a different area and would be back in a couple days and they stated that they could accommodate me and since places to stay are scarce in this area I thought for the price of 85 dollars a night and being able to cook my own meals that would be fine.
The day I returned to work I received a text saying they couldn’t accommodate me and it was very late in the day .
This put me in a terrible bind as I had to scramble for lodging.
My experience is very unprofessional and the dollar store dishes in the other cabin were ridiculous.
If you are going to run a b&b I think you would also do this a bit more professional.
The only good thing was the showers were hot.

Wrangell Mountain Homestead is in a super convenient location if you're driving toward Wrangell St Elias National Park. The rooms are basic, but beds are comfortable. The thing we didn't realize when booking that there is a ratio of 12 people to 1 bathroom. Not a great experience when you have to use the bathroom and someone is in there showering for 45 minutes.

I was thoroughly impressed that the cabin balanced rustic charm with cleanliness, making it both cozy and inviting. The beds were great and the staff were incredibly welcoming and attentive. It was an overall positive experience. It's the perfect spot for a tranquil retreat or an adventurous getaway. Highly recommended!

Convenient to the national park but that's the only positive thing about it. There's old and quaint and then there's old and shabby. Sadly this is the latter. Don't even try to arrive after dark. No lights or signs and the cabins aren't even numbered.

Hosts are rude when asked questions.

If you have other options to stay somewhere take it.

We stayed in the Little House. Clearly things have gone downhill since 2023. The place was very low quality. Difficult to self cater as limited pans. All plates plastic. Bed linen was awful. The blinds in the bedroom did not provide sufficient blackout so nights were quite light. We left one day early.

Beautiful property. Very comfortable room in main building, with full kitchen and mountain views. Owners are nice and everything is very clean.
