I love old hotels and this one doesn’t disappoint. A great location with nice personal touches. The game/TV room was fun. Moody’s downstairs offers a very convenient 4 star dining experience. I have a season pass at Sugar Bowl ski resort and I’m planning on staying here every time I come up.

I loved it here! It felt authentic & homely. Staff were delightful & the room was wonderfully quirky with proper original old bath & sanitary ware. Super shower & nice toiletries. It was clean & well equipped but showed proper respect for its venerable age. The food downstairs was AWESOME! Great live music too.

While this hotel has a unique charm and an appealing location, I experienced significant issues with transparency around billing and overall communication. I booked a group stay with a negotiated rate and provided my card information for payment.

However, upon check-out, an unexpected nightly service fee and tax was added ($10 a night for service, btw), which hadn’t been disclosed in the initial agreement. California’s new transparency law (SB 478) requires clear communication of all mandatory fees at the time of booking, and I believe this hotel’s practices are not in compliance. Even if you book online through their site (which again, we did not), charges are lumped under "taxes and fees" without clarifying the breakdown, making it unclear what you’re actually paying for. This is exactly what the law is meant to fix.

In total, over 45 emails were exchanged to manage what should have been a straightforward booking and to clarify these charges. Responses from management were often defensive and unhelpful, focusing primarily on justifying the charges based on the hotel’s operating costs, rather than addressing the transparency issues surrounding their fees.

If you're considering this property, I’d recommend confirming all charges in writing beforehand, as the billing experience can detract from what might otherwise be a pleasant stay. For travelers who prioritize transparent pricing and efficient service, a larger, more standardized hotel might offer a smoother experience. The rooms are also inconsistent in what they offer - some have AC, some have fans, some have nothing.

The restaraunt downstairs (Moody's) plays loud music past 10pm until who knows when ... don't expect to get any sleep until they turn off the music. I called to try and figure out what time the music is going off but I got a contractor at an "answering service" that told me Moody's is not associated with the hotel even though it's in the same building, and he couldn't help me. Apparently this hotel doesn't have anyone working on site that is available to help. Basically no one works for the hotel on site.

This hotel is very special. You definitely feel like you are going back in time. They know what’s important like comfortable beds and a clean bathroom so you get a nice stay with a feel of an old town hotel. Thing to warn about is, there is no elevator. We showed up late at night and hadn’t thought through where we would keep our skis so we ended up carrying skis and luggage all the way to the third floor. Being up so many flights of stairs, we really thought about what to bring before going to and from the room because it was such a hike up to the room. The staff was very receptive through email and text. We never met face-to-face with anyone who we we had been communicating with. Don’t plan on the breakfast – it’s not worth eating when there are so many great breakfast places nearby. Overall. I would definitely stay at the Truckee hotel again!

Affordable place to sleep, but not the nicest hotel. Very old and noisy. Room size is fine. Breakfast is not hot, but a good snack to grab and go. We were told we ā€˜technically’ had a private bathroom down the hall, but the hotel could not control if that was actually the case (and it was not). Also, the hike you have to do between the overnight parking area and the hotel is a lot in the snowy months.

Can’t get ahold of anybody to even confirm if my rooms were booked since I have received no confirmation. I’ve called three times and each time it’s an answering service only. Never a call back from anybody. The last time the answering service flat out said they reached the owners and was told to give me there email so I could email for correspondence again never heard anything back. 2 star hotel I believe it but they don’t seem to care as long as people keep coming i guess 😤

Tried to book over the phone as I was driving all day and behind the wheel. Reached the front desk who refused to talk to me, web bookings only. I explained I was a driver and asked if I could book over the phone. Absolutely not. Cool. Very hospitable.
