This was my second trip to this wonderful lodge and it did not disappoint. Kate and Justin have managed to assemble a top notch group of guides, pilot, chef, and support staff to make this destination the best I have encountered.
There was a day when the fishing was poor at our assigned area but they chartered another plane to take us in a different direction where the fishing was everything to expect at five star lodge. Their flexibility and dedication to the client is unsurpassed. Above all is the amazing scenery, wildlife, and the staffs goal of making you feel like one of the family.

As the ex owner of a fishing lodge myself, I can say with a fair degree of certainty that what Justin, Kate and their team have created is absolutely world-class.

The fishing was out of this world, the fishing guides were all some the very best we have fished with, the accommodations were warm and extremely tastefully executed, Chris their head pilot is amazing, and then there is the food – just spell-binding.

Kate & Justin have created something very special - we can’t wait to go back.

The Lodge at 58 North is truly a wildly elegant Alaskan experience.

The trip starts with exceptional communication pre travel. All questions answered quickly and completely: What gear do you recommend? What does a day look like? Is it possible to have gluten free meal?

Upon arrival the team creates a very warm reception; a welcoming drink and meal, introductions, a safety briefing, then off to your glorious cabin.

We stayed in Cabin 3 down by the water. It's perfect. All details were beautiful, useful and considered: hooks outside for waders, a simple bench for taking off wet boots, a kettle for tea/coffee, elegant soaps/shampoo, cozy sheets, 2 queen beds, little seating area, and plenty of hot water for warming showers post fishing day. It felt so homey, cheerful and welcoming.

The food is exquisite. Alaskan ingredients, often grown on property presented with an artful flair. Breakfast is cooked to order, lunch is nourishing and warming (a warm soup and sandwich / homemade breads), dinner is incredible and feels as if you are at one of the finest restaurants in the world. Oh! when you are out for the day fishing, there are plenty of snacks...and hot tea.

The fishing. Wow. Needless to say, Alaskan fishing is legendary. The guides at 58North are unparalleled. It is fair to say each guide has something unique to teach you. I asked them to coach me every day because I wanted to get better, to learn, to hear their wisdom and they did it with generosity and kindness. Truly, these are the best in the business.

The pilot. You want the best. The fly outs generally start each day around 7:30a to various locations depending on weather. The pilot at 58North is, in fact, the best. I felt both inspired and exquisitely safe every flight.

As a woman who started fishing later in life I found it initially hard to feel at home in this fly fishing world. The Lodge at 58 North guides and ethos welcomes all. I was fishing next to guests who have been fishing all their lives and who could probably be guides themselves. I, on the other hand, was looking to learn more and to feel as if the community was excited to share their knowledge. The Lodge at 58North is that place.

Exceptional on all levels.

Thank you 58North for a truly memorable week.

This was our third trip to the Lodge at 58* North and we have referred many friends to the Lodge and they were not disappointed. Kate and Justin have continued to push the envelope and improve what was already a 5 star lodge. We have traveled the world and been to many nice lodges. What sets this one apart is their ability to be flexible and be accommodating. We had a slow morning, because the fish had not come into the lake yet. Instead of ending the day, they gave us options to fly out to a different area to fish.

Alaska is a special place. On my last day fishing, we were fishing at the mouth of the Kulik river. I was sitting in front of a fire built by the guides, drinking a cup of gourmet soup made by Chef Jason, watching the bears around us (we later saw a large bull moose and eagles), the mountains had fresh snow, and I had just caught a large rainbow trout. It actually felt surreal, and I will always remember that moment.

Our three trips to fish with Kate and Justin and their guide crew were specifically to fish for (hunt) big rainbows. We accomplished that and gained so much more as well. Our appreciation for the incredible sockeye runs that support the incredible fisheries and wildlife of the Illiamna / Naknek / Bristol Bay area is profound. These have been lifetime trips and experiences.

I traveled here as a solo mid-50s woman traveler for a women's fly-fishing trip and this was my first stay at a lodge like this. Justin and Kate and their staff were generous and gracious hosts. The Lodge and cabins are appointed in a comfortable wilderness elegance. The food and drink were out of this world--each meal different than the next--and the chef tried to use as many local ingredients as possible. The guides are expert in their craft and they quickly understood the things needed to make each angler successful on each outing. I caught king salmon, sockeye salmon and rainbow trout on this trip--multiple times! I loved flying in the float plane--I went to the Brooks River to see the bears and fish for trout and one of the most memorable trips was to a creek on the edges of Katmai National Park to hike and fish--the float plane dropped us off and we hiked across the tundra seeing multiple birds and wildflowers unlike anything I had ever experienced. In fact, if I wasn't such a distracted birder, I would have caught more fish. Each guide knew their stuff and took me to incredible places. On one of the float plane rides back, our pilot pointed out a pod of 50+ beluga whales. I appreciated the ways that Justin and Kate and their staff personalized the experience for each guest. Initially, I thought this might be a once in a lifetime trip for me, but it's not. I'm already thinking about when I will go back and when I do, I will stay here.

This was my first trip to Alaska. When getting mentally prepared for the trip of a lifetime, expectations can run amok, setting you up for disappointment. Rare is the time when reality exceeds these heightened expectations, but Justin and Kate have created an experience that will meet, or exceed, the highest expectations that anyone could have.

The food will dazzle any foodie. I have a food allergy and the Chef Luke and Chef Jason went above and beyond to make sure I was kept out of harm’s way. The fishing will amaze the most hardcore angler. The hospitality is the kind you dream of when paying for a trip of this caliber. Despite its location in the wild, the accommodations are the opposite of rustic. The expert guides are knowledgeable and patient. The staff is unfailingly polite and tries to accommodate every reasonable request. Chris the pilot flies the de Havilland Beaver with a skill that belies his youthful appearance. Every aspect of the trip was absolutely, positively perfect.

Anyone planning a fishing trip to Alaska should make The Lodge at 58 North their home for the week. You’ll arrive as a guest and leave as family.

Sea planes, hikes, raft drifts, sighting, wading, casting, landing some (and losing some) in remote spectacular locations. Glorious, exhilarating, challenging, centering, epic, and a joyful privilege.
