Fun old-fashioned chili-dog joint with decent prices and quick service. There were 4-5 indoor booths for seating plus outside. My teens boys ate 2-3 chili dogs ($3.73/per) each plus onion rings. I didn’t think the all-beef were as good as Costco’s, but it was fun with the chili and toppings. I got baby vanilla custards ($2!) for us each to have a little sweetness at the end. Nice to have a quick, affordable, local option on a road trip, but food wasn’t great enough we’d seek it out again.

Stopped here for a quick snack and ordered shakes and fries. They took a long time to prepare the items we ordered, and after all the wait, it wasn't that good at all. Also, this place doesn't have any type of custard in their menu, so if you stop here for a custard, then you won't get anything like that.

So many flavors!! Apparently you can ask for samples which would’ve been awesome to know beforehand, and would have been kind of the staff to offer when I asked what the pistachio nut tasted like. But they weren’t very helpful at all. The girl at the counter barely spoke. Typical high schoolers too shy to talk or maybe just don’t care. Idk. Kind of disappointing experience as far as service.

Other than that—pretty good custard. Great flavors and texture on a hot summer day.

This reminds me of the small mom and pop hotdog and burger joints from the 70's & 80's.
Food is made to order by the sweetest and nicest staff. I plan my trips on rt79 so I get the opportunity to stop for lunch.
Did I mention any ice cream you want!
Recommend trying.

I recently stopped by The Custard Stand in Flatwoods, WV, and it did not disappoint! I had heard great things about their hot dogs, and their famous Custard Stand Hot Dog Chili really lives up to the hype. It added just the right amount of flavor to their classic chili slaw dog. The casual roadside vibe made it the perfect spot for a quick meal during my travels.

Their soft-serve ice cream was a treat, with several flavors to choose from—lemon custard was my personal favorite. I also tried their onion rings, which were crispy and perfectly seasoned. The prices were reasonable, and I loved that they had outdoor seating, making it a great family-friendly place to relax for a bit.

While the service was a little slow, it was friendly and entertaining which made up for it and the overall experience was well worth it. If you’re ever passing through on I-79, I highly recommend making a pit stop at The Custard Stand. It’s a great little slice of West Virginia with classic American food done right!

Easily accessible from the interstate, you're greeted by a sign on the front door asking for patience with the staff due to understaffing before you ever step foot inside. On my 1st and last visit, the staff consisted of one who was virtually clueless and another who thought she knew everything. Upon arriving there was a couple dining outdoors and another dining inside, so they weren't slammed by any means, but the indoor dining area floor was long overdue for being attended to. The cramped men's restroom was out of paper towels, tiny trash can overflowing, and just generally filthy.

This Custard Stand only offers steamed hotdog buns. While their hotdog chili is delicious, it alone cannot salvage their hotdogs and while edible, they are subpar when compared to others. I've previously eaten at other locations that unfortunately are no longer open and received a significantly better product from much friendlier staff. On this date I drove over an hour to Flatwoods for that same experience, but left very, very disappointed. While I try to support locally owned businesses, this type service makes it virtually impossible to be a returning customer.

The hot dog was good. The bun was not toasted. The coleslaw was okay but nothing special. I would have to give this hot dog a meh plus. It's good and if you just want a hot dog and a drink then it's a good place to stop. I also tried the cup of chili and it was good but a little soupy. Maybe that's why they serve it on the menu as chili soup. It is meh. I would just stick with the hot dog.
