We went a week ago on our way to Homer. We heard the bakery was good so we decided to try it. It is about 10 minutes off the highway. Head up the road past the mercantile shop on the left ( it is about 3-5 minutes after you see the mercantile- head straight). Where the road tees take a left then a right. The place is an order at the counter and they bring it out. There was a line but it moved quick. Even though it was raining we easily got a seat. We split the egg sandwich. My wife does not like sourdough but she raved about this sandwich. On our way back from Seward today after our Homer stop, 4 days later we went for lunch. We both got a cup of soup and sandwich. We thought half sandwich and cup of soup. But it is cup and whole sandwich. Food was great but we could have split it. Service great. Organization great. Clean and relaxing. Would highly recommend if in the area. The picture is of my wife’s cup and sandwich. Navy bean and pastrami. I got pastrami and mushroom. All good.

I’ve been going to The Bake Shop for 45 years, and it used to be one of my favorite spots. Unfortunately, it hasn’t been the same since COVID. They seem to be closed more often than not, with shortened hours from 8 AM to 2 PM—opening late and closing early. While the sandwiches are still excellent and the bread remains a highlight, the breakfast is just average. Even more disappointing, the staff has become impersonal and unwelcoming. We were rushed out at 2:15, barely after getting our food at 2:00. I miss the days when the food was amazing, and the atmosphere felt warm and inviting. It’s sad to see such a longtime favorite lose its charm.

Super busy when we got there. Their soup is so good. Highly recommend you get at least a cup of it. We had a grilled turkey sandwich and a mushroom omelet. Both were fantastic, but I’d have to say the soup was the highlight.

The sourdough pancakes are not really sour to my taste. They were good when eaten with the maple syrup, but they make their pancakes thin and chewy. I prefer thick and fluffy pancakes.

The cinnamon buns have a slight sour taste to the dough. On the other hand, the icing is definitely sweet and sour. I liked it but my kids were not a fan of the sour taste.

The chocolate chip cookies were great! They were soft and yummy.

You ever been to a place that feels like people who are growing up in the town work there? It's hard to describe the energy but it's pleasantly relaxing, even when crowded. I'd suggest getting there early-is as we entered into a line and walked past a line on the way out. It's THAT popular.

There's a reason for that: the food is consistent. Everyone's toast came out perfectly, the bacon was cooked fresh, the eggs were fluffy, and the drinks were good.

Recommendation: Cinnamon bun. Oh. My. Gosh. Not too sweet, crunchy on the top and so delicately light and soft inside. That was the highlight of breakfast, aside from peripherally observing the kitchen staff jamming out to 90s/2000s punk/skater rock and curse at a few fringe toasts.

Sure, if you're a person of color you may get some side glances but it won't be from staff. The food is worth it.

Feels like a locals only hideout. Great food friendly service and I was made to feel welcome. The sourdough pancakes definitely have a different taste, so please don't order them and then say they taste funny. They were great and they keep real maple syrup on the table.

We had bottomless soup and pancakes for breakfast which were good. They also kept different jams on the table.

I had a fan-freaking-tasting Reuben sando here not long ago. It came out HOT and smothered in Thousand Island, and tasted so good on a cold, snowy day. The meat was juicy, fresh and very flavorful. I also ordered a side salad which was generously dressed. It paired excellently with the Reuben.

I couldn’t walk out without trying their famous Sweet Roll. Nothing short of phenomenal. This bad boy is the perfect combo of buttery goodness, flakiness and sweet. The caramel is light, but a little went a long way. Definitely could taste the anise. Topped with a soft, lemony glaze (not very tangy) and sliced almonds, it’s no wonder this treat is so well known. 10/10 would drop in again.
