Thayer Lake Lodge - Angoon, Alaska

We took the Alaska Marine Highway from Juneau to Angoon, and rented kayaks locally. The paddle through Kootznahoo Inlet is beautiful, but one needs to be educated on areas of dangerous tide rips in 2 areas along the way. We spent one day in the Mitchell Bay area, and the next day hiking the trail to Thayer Lake. Canoes had been staged at the end of the trail for us, we then continued the paddle on to the Lodge. Thayer Lake Lodge was built in the late 1940's by Robert & Edith Nelson. They have since passed away and the lodge is now operated by 2nd generation Nelsons. The lodge is not the place one would go to catch boxes of trophy Salmon, but instead gives one a slice of true wilderness, unspoiled by generators, tour buses or crowds of visitors. If you are thinking of going to this remote retreat, or spending time exploring Admiralty Island remember there are few services or forms of entertainment, and one must make plans ahead of time for transportation, food and lodging.
