What an exceptional experience! From bears (oh my! The Bears) to fossils, we had the best 3 days of our trip to Alaska at Snug Harbor. The outpost is a renovated old cannery with the historic elements intact. We were welcomed and treated like old friends. Days were filled with fishing and boat trips to bears and fossil beds. Bird rookeries are an option we didn't have time to explore. We had campfires, saunas and dips in the bay. Visitors are treated to a tour of the buildings and workings of the old cannery. Accommodations are cozy and relaxed, the food is exceptional and personal (dietary restrictions are no problem). The bedrooms are large, comfortable and warm with a large common room. Internet is available in the common room, but not so much anywhere else, which for us was an added benefit. The best part, though, is the bears. We saw 21 bears including 2 black bears (usually very shy) and 2 sows with 2 cubs each. Because the outpost is close to areas not usually frequented by tourists, the bears are in their natural environment and behave like no one is watching. We were able to get close (but not too close!) and just watch them feed and interact with each other. The landscape is pure Alaska--vast and undeveloped with eagles flying and perched in just the right spots for exceptional photos. By the way, the flight to Snug Harbor is included in the cost of the trip. It does bump up the total but is well worth the cost given the breathtaking views of the vast, untamed expanse below. We recommend this outpost most highly for those who are looking for a true Alaska escape.

Alaska isn't perfect, that is part of what makes Alaska special. You need to be flexible with Alaska, and enjoy the adventure that awaits you.|I live in Alaska, and I've been blessed to travel and experience much of the state, but nothing has compared to the level of hospitality and care provided by the Porter family. |The old cannery where you will be staying has been well updated with attention to preserving the history of the site. The Porter's are proud to share the rich history of the active commercial fishing location, along with the natural history and exceptional landscape and wildlife. |I can't express enough how much the Porter family welcomes you with open arms and goes to exceptional lengths to ensure you enjoy your stay and wildlife experience. If you are a photographer, your mind will explode with all the amazing images. Whether you are into historic structures and elements, landscapes, or wildlife, Snug Harbor Outpost will deliver. |My family and I will be returning as soon as we can!

Truly a must for anyone who wants an authentic experience of Alaska. We had the best time during our fishing trip and made some of my favorite memories at Snug Harbor. The fishing was awesome, everything was provided for us, the meals were delicious and was always more than we could eat. The Porter’s were the best guides and made sure everything was taken care of. Absolutely the best bear viewing experience- I don’t think you can get any closer. Couldn’t ask for anything more, we’ll definitely be back!

We had an amazing time at Snug Harbor! The whole experience is so unique and definitely worth it. Abe and Eli were excellent guides and really went out of their way to make us feel at home. The Halibut fishing was so fun and Eli made sure we each caught our limit. The bear viewing was incredible! We saw 12 bears and Abe even took us on a hike through Bear Canyon to see more. They both answered all of our hundreds of questions and shared their knowledge of Alaska. The rest of the crew at Snug Harbor were also so friendly and hospitable. Alicia (the chef) made the most delicious Halibut tacos we have ever had and she always made sure we had snacks and water with us. Even Jane (the housekeeper) was so welcoming and sweet to talk to. We were sad to say goodbye to all of them because we truly felt like family by the end of our trip!

If you want to experience Alaska and all that it has to offer, that's what we did. We had such a great and memorable trip at the Snug Harbor Outpost. If you just want to fish, there are plenty of vendors for that. But if you want to see and experience what Alaska can offer, I highly recommend Snug Harbor Outpost for this. From the fishing, bear viewing, food, ample snacks, seeing the Alaskan beauty, and hospital service and people. The Porter family put in hard work to make it special for us and are top notch folks. I took my boys up for this trip and we all loved it and will be back for more memories . . . and more fish. Thank you Porters!

We had an amazing, fun-filled trip at Snug Harbor Outpost. It had everything we were looking for; bear viewing, fishing and exploring. The best part was that no one else was around - Snug is in an area to itself, providing the Alaskan wilderness at its best. Room and food was also top notch. Additionally, we found the history of the cannery very interesting, an added feature that you can’t get elsewhere. We would highly recommend this to everyone looking to experience Alaska - away from the crowds.

This was truly my favorite trip that I’ve been on in my life. Eli, Abe and the entire crew all worked very hard and went above and beyond to make it great! The food was excellent and lodging was clean and comfortable. From halibut fishing to flossing for sockeye and hiking through bear country in Lake Clark National Park. The confidence and calm demeanor of the guides we were able to get very close to the bears! This was a world class experience! Hope to be back next year!
