The location is phenomenal. We're so close to the beach that we can hear the waves crashing into the shore. However, I feel obliged to let the establishment know that they can do better by renovating their rooms.

We can hear other guests walk and talk in other rooms. We can hear them when they walk the halls. The place is rickety and old. The carpets have stains and make the entire room smell like mildew. There no exhaust fans in the bathroom which makes it difficult to dry towels.

We had a marvelous view of the ocean from our room. It was our home for two nights and it was wonderful. It is such a pristine, lovely room with sea-related decor and a nice fireplace. The bed was quite comfortable, and we also enjoyed sitting at the table by the window. The sea air and the cry of the seagulls were refreshing. The ocean view was unencumbered except by two trees, which just enhanced the view.

The room was beautiful, clean, and comfortable, and the location was amazing -- literally just a few steps away from awesome ocean overlooks, tide pools, and an easily accessible beach. Highly recommend!

If a great location by the beach is what you want, fine. Otherwise, look elsewhere. ||For an overpriced small inn, this is the worst place I’ve ever stayed in the US. If you read past all the 5 star reviews that correctly talk about the excellent location & friendly staff, the 1 star reviews will give you a much better sense of what actually staying here is like. I’m writing this in the early AM as all the noise from makes sleeping impossible! Children & adults stomping around upstairs to the extent that my whole room shakes when they move. The floorboards squeak with every step they take. Ongoing street noise only adds to the problem. ||From their website , you might assume that this is a chic little boutique inn. Nothing could be further from the truth. It is a tired, old property that has seen sporadic upgrades, mostly cosmetic, over time. The rooms actually need to be completely renovated to justify the prices being charged. ||Our kitchenette has all the basics. It would be nice if the outlets for the Keurig & toaster weren’t hidden under the cabinets, where my 4’ 10” wife was the only one able to see them. There’s an induction stove top that was impossible to turn on without downloading a manual from the internet (Hint: it takes a counterintuitive 2-step routine to operate). ||Lighting in the kitchen ( a single, bare, 20 watt Edison bulb) & living room areas is inadequate. Furniture is stained & uncomfortable. A cover on one of the couch cushions was so small that the foam pad was exposed. There’s a large, inoperable wall heater full of cobwebs that should have been pulled out years ago, along with its useless thermostat. Although mini-splits have been installed, some of the required remotes are missing. The TV is an ancient flat screen mounted crooked on the wall. There’s only one towel bar in the bathroom for a two bedroom unit and various other hooks to hang things have been broken off. And, the entire room was damp & musty. ||If I was here for a summer beach vacation I could probably overlook a lot of these issues. However, I’m here to meet up with family for Thanksgiving and wish I’d chosen a comfortable hotel that allowed for a good night’s sleep.

Just 14 rooms. Some have ocean views, others have kitchens. The location is why this is a GREAT place to stay. You walk across the street and you’re at the #1 thing to do in La Jolla- the La Jolla Cove walk along the ocean. Pet friendly. Nice staff available 8-5. We walked to great restaurants and shops.

Rooms are basic. Ours faced out to parking lot so we kept plantain shutters closed. Bed was comfortable. Mini refrigerator and microwave in the closet. Room service when you leave. We stayed 5 nights and asked for clean sheets and towels.

We’ll stay again. It’s a gem of a place.

So much good to say about Scripps Inn. Our room feels like I’m at an Airbnb. Very warm and inviting. We enjoyed the ocean views of course. I think best ocean views are from 2nd or 3rd floor rooms but looks like you can see ocean from 1st floor as well. Super friendly employees who have stopped what they were doing to grab extra towels and help with other amenities. They have bikes you can check out and extra beach toys you can borrow. We loved our stay. Would stay here again.

The woman running the Scripps Inn is so unfriendly. There is 0 hospitality. We are staying in their most expensive room and they don't even have daily room service, I was greeted by her stepping in front of me, so I wouldn't enter the office. We were sleeping on a bed that has sheets that barely fit, so your body touches a bare mattress and when I asked for a fitted sheet, the woman rolled her eyes and said we can have them remake the bed with an attitude. They are very unwelcoming and you can tell that they are not the same owners or management that we have encountered before. We use to go here every Anniversary and now we will not be back. Nothing is updated, everything is breaking and it looks like they are charging the 4.5 star prices and giving 2 star service if that... we are also paying for an oceanfront view and they let the landscape grow infront of the windows facing the ocean. When I mentioned that to management, I was given an attitude like I was asking her to do something about it immediately and I was giving a suggestion that if they are advertising the room as ocean view they should trim their trees so you can see the ocean. That's why we stay in that room. We are very disappointed and will be going to another property for future visits.
