August 2021 - my husband I just returned from a fantastic week at Saltery Lake Lodge. Thoroughly enjoyed the whole week. The accommodations we great, the food was outstanding and the staff couldn’t have been nicer. The two fishing guides, John and Guy, were so nice and excellent guides. The fishing was excellent, the wildlife viewing was great! It was a great week and I told my husband we have to go back again!!

My group and I had a great week fishing and socializing in one of the most beautiful spots in the world. Each day we caught our limit of fish thanks to the top notch, super professional (and fun!) fishing guides. We saw all kinds of wildlife, which was awesome. We ate delicious meals 3x a day thanks to chef Alana, and enjoyed a clean bed to sleep in thanks to Mariam. Dave was an awesome host, coordinating and keeping everything running smoothly. We got lucky and we’re able to have an extra night out with them back in Kodiak! Can’t wait to get back up there!

This was my second trip and it's hard to find better fishing, attentive guides or a more spectacular location than this private lodge provides. Simply wake up, enjoy breakfast and hop in a large, comfortable ATV the size of a truck and you're fishing hardly 15 minutes later. It's not unusual to see what looks to be 50 sockeye salmon or more within a fly cast. Other species like chum, pinks, steelhead and rainbows abound and I have yet to catch the explosive silver run, but would like to. Every meal I had would likely be a proud dish at a restaurant and the chef can even arrange your dining within reason around your preferred fishing schedule. While lounging at the lodge you can often see bear, deer, fox, eagles and loons from your cabin or the dock. You can also leisurely fish in the lake and catch dolly varden and arctic char steps from the lodge. On sunny days, you may also get to explore the nearby ocean beach, see wild horses and try your luck fishing in the salt. Finally, but important, a long history of family ownership and experience means you're in good hands the entire time.

This was our third Time at Saltery Lake Lodge (2013, 2015, and now 2016). I won’t go into much detail compared to the reviews that I wrote for previous visits and try to concentrate on any differences.
Note: Sometimes when searching, the map will show the Office location on Lilly Lake in Kodiak City. You actually fly out of Kodiak City and about 20 minutes later land on Saltery Lake, which is very secluded and NOT in the city. The actual lodge is on Saltery Lake. The pictures of the plane surrounded by lily pads is the location at the office. The lush green photos and variety of photos fishing are at the actual lodge.
You stay at the lodge and it includes the food and guide. You can bring your own fishing equipment or you can rent from them.
There are two or three miles of Saltery Creek between the Lake and Ugak bay (ocean). The lodge will take you in a vehicle anywhere along the river. You get out and fish for a while. You can walk up and down the river and even go to the beach or the vehicle will take you. You can fish before and after lunch. Then after dinner, you can fish the lake. Fish as little or as much as you want. There is a guide with you at all times. The guide will help you as much or as little as you want.
This was the best fishing of all the visits. I’ve been meaning to write this, but I am just getting around to it. We went the first week of August 2016. We went at the very end of Sockeye season this time and this was a record year for Sockeye Salmon coming up the river. Normally the limit is five per person per day, but because there were so many fish, the limit was lifted to ten! There are always a lot of fish on the Saltery, but this year it was crazy and the salmon were bigger than the previous year for some reason.
This trip, it was my dad, my oldest son and myself plus two of my dad’s friends that had never been to Saltery Lake Lodge.
After we first landed on Saltery Lake via float plane, we had lunch and then went out fishing on the river. The five of us kept 32 sockeye in the first three hours of fishing! (C-R-A-Z-Y good fishing!) The next day we kept 45. We each had our planned 50 pounds to take home by the third day. (The lodge filets the salmon, vacuum seals it, freezes it and places it in a waxed box for trip home.)
You catch a lot more fish than you actually keep. For example, there were three different salmon in the river at this time: Sockeye (red), Humpback (pink), and Chum (dog). The Sockeye taste the best, so that is what you keep and you release the others. Also, if a sockeye has started to metamorphosis, you also release it since it will not taste as good. You also catch fish “foul” and have to throw them back. (You have to hook them in the mouth or you have to release them.) The reason that I’m saying this is because when I tell people that we spend 6+ hours fishing, they might think, “how boring”. But we are constantly catching fish the entire time even though we only keep a max of the limit each day. It is awesome!

Excellent Guides, Food, Fishing and Lodging!! Wonderful trip of a lifetime. The cabins are very comfortable with an old fashioned lodge experience. Great views of Saltery Lake and wildlife. Dave does an exceptional job with making this and unforgettable adventure!!

I just returned from my 5th trip to Saltery Lake Lodge for salmon fishing. Absolutely my favorite destination. My title summarizes the experience well I think. This place is suitable for the accomplished fly fisherman, or a novice fisherman. And the staff are efficient, helpful and knowledgeable.

It was another great year at Saltery Lake Lodge. We’ve stayed here six out of the last seven years. The staff is always friendly and I keep telling people how we become part of the family. The meals are top notch. Alana is an awesome cook and knows how to elevate each meal. Mmm…I’m getting hungry thinking about it. I’m not sure which is better: The fishing or the food!||||This year, the sockeye limit was reduced for a few weeks, so we only brought home about 3/4 the amount that we normally do, but it was still one of the best, most fun, fishing years. My wife came this year instead of our oldest son. There were eight of us at the lodge: my dad, my wife, myself along with two of my dad’s friends and three sons/son-in-laws. We had gone to the lodge before with the two friends, but this was the first time for the sons. Along with five staff members: Two guides, owner, chef, and an all-around helper.||||This year was probably a tie with last year for the best bear watching. This year and last were the best! We saw a huge bear jumping at salmon off the Weir. We saw the same young bear make his rounds at least once a day walking by us. He even came strolling across the front grass of the lodge. Then we saw a HUGE momma bear with two cubs. The bears are very calm. They don’t seem to care that we are there. They are just strolling by, keeping their distance. Just another day on the Saltery.||There were a lot of deer this year. The deer are very tiny. A few bunnies. Bald eagles are everywhere as usual, but this year we saw a few times them swooping down to get fish out of the river. We watched as an eagle grabbed a big salmon out of the water, but it was so heavy, he couldn’t fly away with it. He hopped along a fallen tree for a while and then finally dropped it back in the water. I uploaded some videos to youtube. ||||I have reviews from previous years with suggestions on what to bring so I won’t add that here. This year, it was mistier than previous years. You almost can’t tell that it is even misty unless you look up or you just wait an hour and your sweatshirt would be slowly getting wet. So, we kept our rain jackets on during the misting periods. That was new for us. In previous years, it would mist for only a few hours out of the entire week. This time it would mist a few hours every day. Certainly not a problem, but you should bring your rain jacket for this possibility.
