Upon arriving, I was told that I was unable to book one hotel room for myself, my senior parents and my three young children. That it exceeded the maximum capacity of a room, which I was told was posted on a piece of paper that the GM referenced on the desk that I didn’t look at in the moment, as I was headed out the door to go to my room. I looked the next day and the piece of paper said nothing about room capacity. In the moment, I obliged and booked two separate rooms, but in retrospect, I feel like I got scammed. What is the max capacity for a room? By the logic he explained, if it were my husband, myself and our three young children traveling together (as it often is. We ALWAYS stay at choice hotels), we would always have to book two hotel rooms. For THAT reason, I feel like I got scammed.
However, it was just continuous small things and issues from then on.
We were given rooms at the other end of the building. Recently, the area received a large amount of snow. The parking lot was drivable, but there was no clear access to the entryway of the building from the parking lot. The sidewalk in front of the door was clear, however, I had to step numerous times through a snow bank deeper than my ankle to get from my car to my room bringing my luggage in. Was I parked in the right spot? I have no idea, because the lines were covered in snow.
The rooms were ok. In need of some love, but for the rate we paid (for ONE room, not two) it was as expected. However, there were no convenient or extra outlets for charging electronics. You can have a lamp and a clock or a lamp and your cell phone charging or some combination, but you will not have all three, as there was only one outlet available near the bed.
Since I wanted to have the lamp next to the bed readily available, I opted to use the outlet across the room by the tv to charge my device. Looking behind the entertainment center, I noticed what looked like a chewing tobacco container and lid behind it.
Aside from having to pay for two rooms, I could have forgiven all of these things for the price we paid for one room. However, walking through the snowbank multiple times was pretty unappealing.
The next morning, we headed down to the hot breakfast, which I was told was available from 6-9. Now, we DID arrive at 8:45, so I did not expect things to be full as if we had arrived at 6:15. However, everything was cleaned up. Everything had been removed and cleaned as if it were over. I have arrived shortly before the end of breakfast at MANY Choice hotels, and while things might not be available/stocked if I had understandably been there earlier, it was NEVER closed before the appointed time.
When the clerk/breakfast attendant saw us arrive, she brought the sausage, eggs, biscuits and gravy back to a table so we could have some, which was nice of her. She could have told us no.
The only thing I really care to have at a breakfast is waffles, which are usually available even arriving 15 minute before it ends, but they weren’t. I wasn’t mad that I couldn’t have a waffle, however, at every other Choice hotel I’ve ever stayed at, I’ve always been able to get a waffle, even arriving 15 minutes before the breakfast ended.
My daughters asked for juice. The juice dispenser was shut off. I asked the clerk/attendant if we could get some and she came in and nicely turned it back on for us.
However, she then took off the drip tray, so we didn’t dirty what she just cleaned and then she stood there and watched us as we got our cups of juice. Again, it was nice that she enabled us to get our juice, but it was also freaking awkward that she stood there watching us.
We ate. Shortly before we finished, she turned off the lights in the room, however, not the ones above us. Again, not a huge deal, not terrible… just… tacky.
However, the thing that sealed it for me was the cockroach that scurried across the floor in my room and the deodorant guard that comes on a new bottle of deodorant right next to the bed.
