If you are considering booking a hunting/fishing trip with Kodiak Safaris in Larsen Bay, you should attempt (I say attempt because it may not be possible) to clarify a few things before you arrive.
First - ensure the owner, Randy, will NOT be assisting you during your stay. He is a bitter, foul mouthed old man who has zero business interacting with clients. We lost count of the number of times he flippantly used the “F” word and spoke to us like we were inferior to him, simply put, unprofessional. He also has very little grasp on the current status of wildlife on the island. He was emphatic there was NO chance we would see a bear. We saw a bear. He said there are NO ptarmigan on the island. We saw, shot and ate ptarmigan. He said there are NO oysters on Kodiak. There are oysters littering the beaches. It is doubtful he has hiked more than a hundred, make that fifty yards in the last decade.
Second, the co-owner and spouse of Randy is Terri. She is a pleasant distraction from her husband. In person she is alert, attentive and a friendly conversationalist. She keeps the house clean, the meals hot and always has the van ready for pickups and drop offs. Sadly, there is a downside to Terri as it pertains to her handling of the bookings and logistics. She is hard to get ahold of (which is strange because there is strong cellular and Wi-Fi in Larsen Bay) slow to respond to inquiries and is utterly and completely inflexible.
Lastly, the saving grace of the whole operation is the team members of the second boat crew, Captain Mo and Troy. They are both extremely friendly, easy to talk to, hard working, knowledgeable, FLEXIBLE and just fun to be around. Book a trip with them for a week and you’ll be rewarded with great memories. Not enough can be said about their contribution and value to Kodiak Safaris. Without them, the business would falter.
