I took an awesome 1/2 day fly fishing trip on the lower Kern River with Guy Jeans. First time fly fishing and being on the Kern in a float.
My guide Guy, taught me the basics of fly fishing including river safety, types of flies, casting, types of species (fish), etc. He was very patient with me. Great guy. Good conversations. I caught a total of 5 fish. I caught a small mouth bass, large mouth bass, spotted bass, and 2 mean mouth bass. It was a great day. Lots of fun.

The fly shop is stocked with anything and everything you need for fly fishing. It’s very clean and well organized. Dan O, the shop Manager is a nice guy. He was friendly and helpful. I bought 3 hats from the shop.

Overall, great experience. I recommend the Kern River Fly Shop and their guided tours.

Just starting my fly fishing journey. Did the beginners course Sat morning with Ryan. Fly tying class Saturday evening with Rob. Then did a half day guided trip with Rob Sunday morning.
Tried to get as much learning as possible in over the weekend. And I did. It was so worth it. I saved myself so much time and effort learning from the pros day one.
Ryan and Rob (brothers) are kind, patient, and are a wealth of information and experience. Dan who worked the counter at the shop was great. He helped me with my kit and didn’t try to sell me more than I needed.
The guided half day with Rob was awesome. He took us to four different spots. Explained the river system, where to fish based on current and rock formations. He flipped over rocks so we could see the insects living in the river and then compared them to the flies in his flybox. I got to use the fly I tied Saturday night on the river Sunday afternoon. Rob was right there to help with snags and tangles. He adjusted and refined our casts and then provided positive encouragement as we got better.
I highly recommend both the shop, the classes, and the guided trips.
I signed up for the weekly fishing report which gets you 15% off in store and online purchases.
The report is $40 for the year. I easily saved three or four times that with the discount.
Going back in April knowing a few spots to fish and with the experience to use a fly rod decently.

Inspired to fly fish the Kern River for the first time I highly recommend hiring a guide out of the Kern River fly shop. It will save you a bunch of time cutting out the guess work of where to fish and what to use.
This outfit is very friendly and professional.
My guide Ryan Buhler taught me a lot and he was very kind to lend me a pole for the rest of my trip after I managed to break mine.

We spent much of Sunday with Rob for a fly fishing lesson. He took us up to Fish Creek, a beautiful 1.5 hour journey through the Sequoia National Forest. Rob is knowledgeable and highly motivated in his craft. He also knows a great deal about the environment we were fishing in. He is accommodating in every way possible. I can’t say enough about this fly shop and the guys that run it! Not only do they provide expert advice to any that wonder in, but they do so with humility and a sense of warmth that will make any angler feel right at home. They have the dope, specialized gear, and all the customized files that will make any trip a success. My buddy and I went out for a full day trip with Rob Buhler, and I gotta say it was one of the best guided experiences I’ve ever had. Rob spent a lot of time helping me improve my technique, and most importantly, put us on some epic kern river rainbow. The Buhler brother’s reputation in the area was affirmed and I’m grateful for the education, shop talk, and special spots I’ve never fished. I started fishing the Kern watershed in 1986. We used to have a fly shop in Bakersfield (The Fishin Hole), but it closed probably 25 years ago. After that, it was online or a two hour drive for any supplies. Guy opening his shop in Kernville 20 something years ago was a Godsend. Guy, Dan, the Buhler brothers, are all such good humans. On top of that, they know their fishing. You will not feel like an outsider walking into Kern River Fly Shop. There are no stupid questions. They have all the gear you could possibly need or want and are very competitive on price. After you have visited the shop in the morning, fished til you are tired, you can grab a great meal and a beer at Kern River Brewing Company. I currently have fishing licenses in 6 states. I see a lot of fly shops and meet the staff..... Guy also has a school of flyfishing and they provide a great guide service. Trust me you cant go wrong with Kern River Fly Shop. Tight Lines!

Had a fantastic full day of fly fishing with Rob. Would highly recommend!
He taught us the fundamentals in addition to the science behind them so we could understand why to use certain techniques and equipment. He took us to the best spots in the area. He also took the time and effort to make sure we were comfortable during lunch and while changing in and out of the fishing gear. We specially appreciated that followed up with us after the lesson to answer any questions we had during the day, and to provide extra information about gear and future fishing trips.
