Eatery Profile and Specialties

At its core, Fujiyama is a dedicated Japanese restaurant and Japanese steakhouse. This specialization means that the menu is carefully curated to showcase the best of Japanese culinary traditions, with a particular emphasis on grilled meats cooked tableside. The teppanyaki experience, involving the dramatic cooking of steaks, seafood, and vegetables on an open griddle in front of diners, is a central attraction, offering both visual entertainment and exceptional food. Complementing this is the hikariyaki method, which involves cooking food directly on the grill, often also presented to guests.

Menu Variety and Dietary Considerations

The menu at Fujiyama offers a range of options catering to diverse tastes and dietary needs. Guests can enjoy traditional Japanese steakhouse favorites alongside smaller plates perfect for sharing or sampling. The restaurant demonstrates a commendable effort towards inclusivity by thoughtfully including vegetarian options and healthy options on its menu, ensuring that everyone can find something appealing. Furthermore, the availability of small plates makes it suitable for solo dining or appetizer rounds before the main meal.

Atmosphere and Service

The ambiance at Fujiyama is often described as cozy, trendy, and welcoming, creating an environment where both locals and tourists feel comfortable. While service is generally noted for its politeness, as highlighted in various reviews, the pace can occasionally be an area of feedback. Some patrons have mentioned waiting times for seating, particularly during busy periods like those with many hibachi birthday celebrations, and have noted that drinks and cocktails might take longer to arrive at times. However, the fast service aspect is also frequently praised, suggesting that the experience can vary depending on specific circumstances.

Bar and Beverage Selection

For those looking to extend their evening, Fujiyama boasts a well-regarded bar onsite. The cocktail selection is a highlight, alongside a great tea selection, a variety of coffee, a wide array of beer, wine, and hard liquor. This focus on beverages adds another layer to the overall dining experience.

Additional Amenities

Fujiyama caters to various dining scenarios and guest requirements. It is well-suited for lunch and dinner services, making it a versatile option throughout the day. The restaurant welcomes solo dining guests and caters to groups, including families and tour groups. A key feature for families is the availability of high chairs and a dedicated kids' menu, ensuring that children can enjoy the meal as well. The free parking lot provides convenience for all visitors.

Customer Experience Insights

With a significant number of reviews (430 on Google My Business) averaging a strong 4.4 out of 5, Fujiyama holds a positive reputation among its customers. Reviews often praise the food quality and the entertaining nature of the steakhouse show. However, as seen in some feedback, there are recurring themes such as the need for seating improvements, potential enhancements to air conditioning, and suggestions for updates to the overall decor and ambiance to keep the restaurant feeling modern. Despite these points, the restaurant is frequently noted as a valuable destination for teppanyaki dining in the Charleston area, often being the only option of its kind locally.

Why Choose Fujiyama

For anyone seeking a memorable dining experience in Charleston, Fujiyama Japanese Steakhouse presents a compelling option. It offers a unique Japanese steakhouse experience centered around the exciting teppanyaki cooking style. The combination of authentic food, diverse drink offerings, and thoughtful amenities like accessible facilities and a kids' menu makes it suitable for a wide range of occasions, from casual dinners to special celebrations. Its reputation for quality food and unique entertainment provides a strong incentive for visitors and locals alike to include it on their list of places to visit.

Conclusion

Fujiyama Japanese Steakhouse occupies a distinct niche in the Charleston dining scene. While it has areas where it could potentially improve based on customer feedback, its strengths in providing authentic Japanese cuisine, particularly teppanyaki, a welcoming atmosphere, and accessible features remain significant. It continues to be a notable destination for those looking to enjoy Japanese steakhouse dining in the region.

2nd time visit and quality was the same. Food is good and kids enjoyed the show. Two comments to highlight: A/C needs improvement and chairs are sticky. Overall, I guess they are the only place that has teppanyaki in town

I wasn't impressed at all for the amount of money spent. And I am very much aware of how much it costs to eat here usually, I'm just saying I wasn't impressed with the limited amount of veggies that I got with my steak hibachi stir fry. I felt like for the price of it, I definitely should have received a full portion not just a couple veggies here and there. Also the dressing for the house salad was gross, we usually eat at the one in Summersville, WV and their dressing is sweet, where the one in Charleston wasn't. I guess it's all a matter of preference but the veggie portion was definitely short from what it should have been. It also took minute to get my bill when the place was clearly not busy. I'm a former server, so I get it shit does happen but anytime I wasn't loaded down with tables, all at once, I could pretty much handle it, and I got my stuff out in a timely manner and pre-bussed my tables (which also wasn't done at all until we were leaving the restaurant. So we sit with piled up dishes the whole time. On a positive note, the yummy roll was amazing!

The calamari was chewy and tasted freeze dried. The worst I have ever had. I ordered the steak and it came cold and over seasoned. We both ordered miso soup but got two different soups. The waiter could not or chose to understand what we said any time we asked questions about our food. In the end I spent more than $50 for food neither of us ate more than a couple of bites. Never returning.

We have NEVER had a bad night here until yesterday. So we didn't tip. Our food was cold when we got it. The waiter never checked back on us. When we would try to talk to him he would ignore us. We asked to speak to a manager they didn't have one. So when it was time to leave we paid the bill but didn't tip. This waiter had the audacity to put his hands on my husband and push him back down in the seat and demand a tip. They never called us after taking our numbers and never reached out after.

Ordered 2 sushi rools. Shrimp crunchy roll and a spicy tuna roll. Both were not edible. Rice was off tasting, Shrimp roll had nothing but cucumber, spicy roll tuna was blended with something and was like a rock. Won't go back.

The California roll barely had any crab, so it was essentially cucumber and avocado. Service is atrocious, I went twice and they never checked up on me once, both times. Fish isn't all that fresh either. And the miso soup isn't miso soup it's clear soup. There's better place to go

Fujiyama always impresses with the food and the show that goes along with it. It has become a family tradition to stop here and eat when we are traveling home from vacation. I didnt get very many pics but the helping size is huge. If you leave there hungry its your own fault. I ordered the steak and shrimp with vegetables. The rest of my party got the hibachi chicken, rice, and yum yum sauce. Everyone in the group was happy with there meal.
