I grew up in Salem and Fort New Salem has always been a favorite local historical museum that I find fascinating. I used to volunteer here when I was younger and have beautiful childhood memories because of it. Now, I will get asked to demonstrate Appalachian Clogging (my specialty) at weekend celebrations and events. It’s truly an amazing treasure for our town and I look forward to it’s future endeavors and restorations.

According to maps they were open only to get there and find out they were not. I was doing a historical cross country trip from the west coast to the east but taking back roads.

We attended Spirit of Christmas in the Mountains. It was educational as well as entertaining. The vendors and presenters were knowledgable and friendly. It was a chilly afternoon, but we stayed for the tree lighting ceremony which was lovely and inspirational. Well worth the 5 dollar fee for adults.

Found this place by accident. Had some friends that did they do a Christmas tree lighting and it sounded fun. Then we found out they celebrated Belsnickel. Obviously knowing the office reference we had to go. Unfortunately they didn't do alot of interactive stuff and the whole layout was much smaller than anticipated. It was a short day and we went through the site pretty quickly. They did have shuttle services and plenty of parking at the college near the fort. Would go back if it was part of a larger day tip.

Had a blast with my son during the settlers xmas exhibition. My only complaint was the lack of any food options during the event. We had to leave earlier than planned because we all got hungry.

Love to visit in early December at their Spirit of Christmas in the Mountains program. Early history of the area, artisans, crafts, food, music, gifts. Great for children.
