7/12/2024. We did the 4.5-hour Baldknob train ride. Family of four(2 teenagers). We had a blast. Very nice ride through the Appalachian mountains. If you love trains, this is a must if you are close by. They feed you when you board the train. ( sandwich, chips, cookies, and macaroni salad plus a bottle of water) Make sure you arrive early and check out the store. The conductor "Denny" let my daughter run the brakes on the way back down the mountain, which made her day. She went from not having much fun to I would do that again.

Wonderful experience! Worth!!

IMP: Mobile network drops around 60-70 miles before reaching Cass. They have open WiFi upon arrival. So, get offline maps downloaded in your phone.

Company Houses: If you want to experience a pleasant stay at scenic historic homes built early 1900s, this is the place. Don’t worry, just house structures are old but they are upgraded with modern amenities 😊 like AC/Heater, fire safety alarm, full kitchen, etc. Cleaning before handing over the keys to guests could have been better.

Bald Knob Train: best experience. don’t forget to carry a blanket in case needed; sometimes one may need it. Keep ear plugs if needed, train whistles are loud. The view from Bald Knob is just unforgettable.

Cass Company Store: enjoy shopping, dining in, museum and theater inside!

The 5.5 hour ride from Cass to Durbin and back was a real delight on a historic engine and coach. The Shay #5, the only one of its type to still be operating on its home tracks for over 115 years, and riding in the only still operational 100+ year old steel Pullman Coach, is a true experience. This slow-paced train ride follows the Greenbrier River providing some beautiful scenery. Our ride in mid-September, despite drought conditions and low water levels, still had the beginnings of gorgeous fall colors. We saw bald eagle, deer, black bear, turtles, etc.
We had the great blessing of not having a full ride, so we were able to rearrange the coach seats to have more leg room and to change seating, at will, to catch the sites.
We were expecting a cold-cut boxed lunch, but were pleasantly surprised that it was a cold-cut buffet at a restaurant in Durbin. Good options and satisfactory quality. This is a long ride, but they do allow you to pack snacks & water.

Wonderful scenic trip behind a coal fired steam engine locomotive. We took the Bald Knob excursion, and it was great. Highly recommend this trip. BTW, there's no cellphone service in this area because of the nearby Radio Telescope. Download anything you think you might need (maps, music, etc). Also, car G is handicap ♿️ accessible and has a restroom 🚻. FYI

Very well preserved industrial park, come take a train ride to top of the mountain, enjoy fresh breeze and see some wild animals.
Friendly staff with well maintained equipment, I will come back again.

Did the 2 hour Whittaker trip. Lovely trip! 45 min trip up with a few switchbacks in the woods up the mountain (11% grade at one point!!), 45 mins at Whittaker (cute little picnicking area, I recommend bringing food but they do have a small concession stand (sofas, water, coffee, hot dogs, nachos, ice cream bars, ect for sale) and some old equipment to look at, also non-porta potties bathrooms), and 45 mins back down to the start. Not usually my thing, but my husband was THRILLED and it was an enjoyable morning

We opted for the Greenbrier Express (6 hour ride along the River with “hobo” lunch in Durbin). The scenery was beautiful and peaceful. Rhonda, our “hostess” was a lot of fun and very knowledgeable about the train, the tracks and West Virginia trivia! We saw some wildlife (Blue Heron, deers and turtles) but missed out on the beavers and river otters!!
I’m in no way a train enthousiaste but the Shay was beautiful!!
We’ll be back to try the other excursions they offer!!
Having the free charging point for our car was an awesome perk!!
