Horrible experience.
I hiked 6 hours and came to this 3 stars hotel at 8:30pm
It’s a self check in place which means nobody at front desk.
Then I found there was no hot water.
The room name I booked is Pelican Beach in the Boat House (Yellow Building) upstairs.
I booked for better view.
The room only has a bath tub. The hot water need to wait 5 minutes then came out for 10 seconds then became cold.
So I had no shower at all sleeping the whole night.
I called earlier in the morning, then wait an hour and finally they send me to another building, the room name is “first mate”, which smells gas even before getting into the room.
Then I went upstairs took a shower. And the water volume and pressure is 1/3 of my house.

This is an old house, for comfort level, I will not come back.
So if you don’t want risk your vacation, don’t pick this place.

We’re so lucky that we found the Captain’s Inn!!! Our room was quite big, had everything we needed and offered a stunning view. Even out of the bathtub. The common areas offer everything else you might need like a fridge, wine glasses and a coffee/tea station.

The bed was super comfortable and we enjoyed waking up overlooking the area with all its wildlife. We checked in one day earlier and great service was offered via phone.

We thought even the price was absolutely fine, comparing it to chain motels right next to the highway. Every extra dollar was worth it!!

Lucky us that we have another night here!! We’ll definitely be back! THANKS!

I loved how cozy this place was. The rooms are well equipped, the bed was very comfortable, and the water pressure in the shower was great. I had an easy self check in after dinner and felt very much at home in this location. The innkeepers clearly put a lot of attention and care into this place.

Our small cozy room was a perfect getaway, far from the city bustle! We were treated to a stunning sunset and vibrant evening skies. Early morning brought a surprise, a huge variety of birds and even an otter! Check-in was so easy, and the room had everything we needed including binoculars for bird watching.

Booking review

Watch out for this place and their secret charges. Especially if you’re booking through booking. They charge an instant $100 deposit to your card that they claim goes toward the final booking fee which is fine, but here’s where it gets dicey. Watch out for False pretenses and no response from the company. The booking states 100% refundable up until a certain date, then I cancel because my pet is very sick WELL before the cancellation date (booking stated free 100% cancellation before 2/6 on their website. I cancelled in January) I myself had to reach out to them to receive the deposit back (did not go about refunding it on their own like most hotels) and then when they do refund it it is 85% and they claim they keep the rest for credit card processing fee. Wild! We have stayed here multiple times and very disappointed in the company pulling a fast one which is likely due to the fire right across the street that was burning toxic chemicals for 3+ days. Very shady, sad that a company values money like that more than returning customers who live down the street and used to love to come here for a little getaway. This has completely changed my mind and I will sadly not return to a place that they value their money over customers and it shows. I understand needing money these days, but try and put customer service first if you value your returning customers who are your Santa Cruz neighbors. More importantly if you’re advertising something like “free cancellation, 100%” then you need to back that up or it discredits you guys big time. Very disappointing. I’ve also reached out to the company again with no response so I will be calling my bank this morning to dispute the charges that have been left without any previous statement that they charge credit card processing fees.

Small rooms with everything you need and a fabulous view. We stayed in one of the top floor rooms in the yellow building and had huge window views of the Old Salina’s River, a marshy area right behind a huge sand dune. We could hear the ocean, and sea lions, but could not see it the actual ocean beach, which was still great. Look at a map, it’s a protected brackish area, with a very close jetty of trail and dunes where you could drive, walk, or bike out and do miles of nature.

The river was a bird and sea otter lovers paradise. Beyond constant otters, we saw egrets, cormorants, a pair of nesting mallards, hummingbirds. In our unit you could take a bath with a gas fireplace running and watch the wildlife. Big TV with lots of channels, but we only watched it the first night because we were too busy watching real life at all the beaches.

No fridge or kitchen capabilities in the room but the big, old cool house in front has a common kitchen for use.

My only only complaint would be a slightly too firm mattress and the boat bed frame is super kitschy and cute, but hard to get in if you’re not able bodied. But that said, some people will really like it. I’d like more pillows too, but it was clean and the staff was courteous.
There are a couple cute places like coffee shops and such around it but Moss Landing is more about getting away. You can always stay here for a lot cheaper and then drive a couple miles to Monterey, Santa Cruz, or Castroville. Lots of beaches and nature walks nearby. If you want cheap, fresh fruits and veggies there are a lot of stands. The nature on the Central Coast is unbeatable overall. Just stare at the ocean for a moment to see whales, sea lions, seals, otters, etc. We stayed here to get away and go see a concert in Monterey, would recommend!

The place is great but the new check in sucks. I stood outside my room yelling my credit card number into my phone and my address. They had it already. Just text me the code to get in. The place is quiet and you can walk to Elkhon Safaris. Bring a bottle of wine.

The location on the Salinas River is fantastic. If you are in one of the river view rooms, you awaken to a view of egrets, pelicans, harbor seals, sea otters and the sounds of nearby sea lions. The High Seas room was charming with decor cut from an old fishing boat. The room, though, had two broken towel racks and the electrical outlet on one side of the bed was dead. The proprietor made late arrival easy by sending the entry codes. The common area for eating is nice and has a refrigerator that you can use. However, when the coffee maker didn't work and I texted the proprietor, they said housekeeping would take care of it. It was still inoperable the next morning, so I figured out for myself that the culprit was yet another electrical outlet with no juice. Still recommend it, but there are some loose ends, given the price.
