This was the main hideout for the Navajo nation back in the day. Kit Carson and the cavalry explored the area and engaged the Navajo here. Listen to the book ‘Blood and Thunder’ for a great detail on this. Spectacular views from above. Stayed at the main campground. You can only go down into canyon with local guide-tour.

Spectacular! We stopped by briefly on our way to Horseshoe Bend. Didn't know anything about it and so were surprised by how amazing and beautiful this spot is. It has a great visitor centre and we loved that we basically had the place to ourselves! Only had time to stop off at a couple of the overlooks but would love to come back and do a tour in the canyon one day.

Beautiful overlooks, nice visitors center and appears to have a nice campground (was closed). Dense fog the day we were there but still gorgeous. Will return when canyon tours and camping are open

Nice welcome center. There was room for large RVs to park. Got helpful information for planning our drive. Nice gift shop and restrooms. Did the South rim drive. We spent 2 hrs for drive including eating our lunch. We did experience much traffic in late October on a weekday.

Place is famous of course but to get to see the bottom of the canyon and the old settlements it’s no longer possible to walk down the White House trail. Only by paying a stack of dollars you’ll get access to that and you’ve to be in early in the day. Past 4pm you’re good to drive along the scenic road and get to the overlooks for a few pics. The views are nice but even the overlook a the former White House trailhead is closed now so not a chance to see those settlements. It’s Navajo way + $$ or no way only now. That’s why it’s 3 stars only. I mean it’s fine to support local guides but cutting off people from the main overlook that’s not cool. There’s still one small settlement visible from the north rim on the first stop when you drive up from the visitors centre. None are visible from the south rim.

Indeed sunset is nice and it’s incredibly quiet down there.

Excellent free national park with great views. Easy drive and park and walk to the overlook. Doesn't get enough credit. Bathrooms only at the visitor center. The South loop does not connect with the North loop. When you reach the end of the south loop, you have to go all the way back to pick up the start of the North loop near the visitor center.
