I lived in Stevenson just about all my life and had been to several functions here throughout the years. Since moving away, coming back to visit family and friends always poses a challenge of where to stay. I chose The Amber House for my stay this time. I felt so comfortable and loved talking with Mrs. Sarah every morning. She comes from a long line of great cooks so breakfast was always delicious. I had a bag of cookies on my pillow and upon eating one, I thought this is heaven in a bag!!! If you are looking for a relaxing, small town, Southern experience, this is the place for you.

So My family and I stayed at the Amber house a a few days while we were visiting family in Stevenson. What a cool place! Each room was decorated differently... I stayed with my 2 boys in a western themed room. I cannot even begin to tell you how good Sarah Gamble's food was ... My son still talks about her home made biscuts and gravy, bacon, eggs , hashbrowns... and fried chicken she made for a special event we had. WOW.... great food, I wish I had her cooking for me at my home 🙂 Anyways, Overall nice place to stay an Mrs. Gamble is so very sweet.

Well we were doing a little get away and found this place on line, so decided to call and make a reservation. When we arrived, we were quite surprised to discover that it is right across the street from a very busy railroad track. After being welcomed and chatting for a bit, we were shown our room on the second floor. It was a nice big room with some antique or vintage furnishings. I'm a little conflicted in writing this because I want to be very positive as I really liked the hostess/owner and I really liked being there, but there were some things that weren't great. For one, there are no showers in the house, each room has it's own bathroom, which were added later using the large walk-in closets, which means there is no closet space or place to hang anything. All room has a bathtub, no shower. Our tub was actually in the bedroom, not the bathroom as there wasn't space for it in the former closet. The place was surface clean, but when I looked behind the desk to find a place to plug in my cell phone charger, there was a lot of accumulated dust. There were no pillows with pillow cases, only the decorative pillows in the shams. The mattress was nice and comfortable, but the bed frame was old and creaked and groaned every time you moved. There was a gas fireplace in the room for heat and a window unit for A/C. It was mild weather and we didn't use either one.||The house was built in 1909 and was grandiose in it's day. Much of the original is still there, windows, doors, floors and wood trim are all original, giving it a real historic look and feel.||We were asked what time we wanted breakfast, and that was nice that we could pick our own schedule. Sarah cooked us a nice breakfast of scrambled eggs, bacon, biscuits and gravy. We had orange juice, coffee and hot tea. Nothing fancy, but very good and hearty. ||We probably won't stay here again, although the price was very reasonable and the hostess very friendly, but between the trains & creaking bed we didn't get much sleep and with the surface clean, no shower and no pillows it just wasn't quite up to what we expect.

I have never met such a rude spiteful and downright nasty business owner. Claims to be kid friendly when in fact it is not. Let’s not forget to mention that this establishment is not accessible to handicapped individuals at all no wheelchair ramp into the establishment or anywhere on the property for that matter or elevator to the rooms upstairs. And the stairs to the balcony have no railing, which I’m sure is not up to code, not to mention the balcony itself looks like it’s about to fall it’s sagging so much. She claims to be a Christian lady but had the audacity to say that a non-verbal non-mobile special needs child would run off her customers and she “won’t make any money!” And that she doesn’t care that we were quarantined from being Covid tested “there is a motel across the road!” (it’s actually on the opposite side of town). And told us “you’d bring that around a 70 year old woman, I won’t my keys and you out! THIS IS MY HOUSE! Or I will just go see the judge!” I would not recommend this place for a dog to stay at, she’d probably beat it just for being an animal! What type of person says a special needs child is the reason they are gonna lose money? It’s the nasty hateful attitude you have that’s losing you money and customers....

My husband was working in the area for about 2 weeks and this place was a answer to our prayers. It's clean, quiet(except for the train)and very homey. Mrs. Sarah is just a wonderful person. Thank you Mrs. Sarah for taking good care of my Joe. ||||Katrena-B'ham

You will not meet a sweeter kinder innkeeper than Ms. Sarah, and I'm sure that you will ever have food finer than you can have here. There is not a meal that she prepares that won't leave you stuffed and wishing you had room for more. She will take good care of you and anything you want to know about Stevenson, she can tell you!
