My wife and I just had our wedding at the Sunset Resort. The grounds and homes were incredibly beautiful, however communication with resort staff and service was awful. We hoped our wedding would be a stress free weekend and we stored $700 worth of booze in the small banquet hall during our wedding to save for our lake day, as we rented the grounds for 3 days. On our lake day, the banquet hall was locked and the owner told us that a cleaning crew had cleared everything out and they were entitled to take anything left in there. Not once was this communicated to us and we were all on the property that day. Not a single person called us, texted us or approached us to give all of our items back. Very disappointed with the lack of communication and stress that this venue caused us on our wedding weekend. We also came for a walk through the day before our wedding, which was booked a year in advance and the small banquet hall had construction work being done on it, the deck was not finished, temporary railing was installed, and the floors were dirty from the construction work. The floors remained dirty during our rehearsal dinner the following night and it was never communicated to us that construction was occurring ONE DAY prior to our wedding that wasn’t even finished on the day of the event.

I am so honored to have the chance to tell you how awesome this resort is. We hosted our family for new years eve and it was the best thing we could have done! The place was clean, it had all the appliances we wanted and even a whirlpool jacuzzi for the kids and my hubby and I! If you have a need for a place in Alaska no matter if it's a retreat, wedding, or just family gathering this is the best place... oh did I mention it's right on Big Lake so please check it out its perfect for that private getaway with family or friends!

We held our daughter’s wedding at this beautiful Big Lake resort and although the grounds and homes sound wonderful for a night or weekend stay, we don’t recommend ever dealing with the owner Kathy Giles for booking a wedding. || Not knowing in advance how many guests would need accommodations, my daughter and her fiancé chose the Silver Package at a cost of $6434.75, which included rental of the grounds, pavilion, tables, chairs and table linens and the Cedar House for their stay Fri & Sat. We discussed the option with Kathy of our wedding guests renting rooms in the McKinley House on our tour (which was rescheduled after she confirmed a day & time via email but was not at the venue when my daughter, her fiancé and myself arrived, so we had to rebook) and she assured us that the rooms could be rented for one, two, or three nights individually and that she would go as far as to not book “other” guests in the house on our weekend if most of the rooms were rented. Kathy showed us each room and assured us that the refrigerator and kitchen could be used if the house were full. We also were told that we could bring our own BBQ for the rehearsal dinner on Fri. afternoon and that it was a good thing we were planning on bringing our own burgers to grill because they had just hired a new chef at their on-site restaurant and she couldn’t recommend their catering services.|| Once the venue was chosen, contract singed and half paid in advance, my daughter set up a web-page on a popular wedding site and carefully listed the Venue and accommodation options for out of town guests and relatives which included area camp grounds, hotels, and RBO's in the Big Lake area. Although we’d read negative reviews prior to the additions to the McKinley House, the more recent reviews of the venue were more positive and appeared that some of the earlier issues with the owners disorganization had improved. (We also took note of written comments on lack of toilet paper and non-return of deposit and damages and fines for dogs and smoking). ||Our problems began when friends and relatives began calling me at my home in Anchorage saying they’d left numerous messages for Kathy to reserve a room in the McKinely House with no returned call or that she had returned their calls and charged their credit cards a full night stay with no emailed confirmation (some up to 4 months in advance). I personally had to call Kathy only to find out that she has no computerized way to make reservations and I spent almost an hour on the phone confirming who she had booked after emailing me a handwritten map….finding out that she had left at least one guest off who had been charged and had overbooked the house with at least two guests needing to be moved to her new “Lakeview Retreat” newly built at the Venue. My red-flag was up, but I chose to keep things positive and hope for the best come wedding time.||As guests arrived on Friday afternoon for check-in Kathy’s husband Newell was on the grounds completing a large garden project and weed-wacking overgrown grass around the pavilion and told my husband and I that the maid had finished with the Cedar House cleaning from the previous night and that we could move our rehearsal dinner food into the refrigerator and begin the outside set-up for the rehearsal….when Kathy arrived and began greeting guests at the McKinley House who were waiting on the large deck for check-in, it was very apparent that she was totally confused by a re-booking and room-change that were both pre-approved via telephone with her prior to the “no cancellation” period but she had not WRITTEN DOWN…I had to stop organizing for the rehearsal and retrieve the hand-written map she had emailed me to tell HER which rooms she’d booked her guests. It was chaotic and so mismanaged that all everyone wanted to do was have it over with and begin enjoying the reason they had all traveled so far. Kathy mentioned several times that she had two other weddings at her other venues and her cell phone rang continually, interrupting the check-in process at the McKinley House.||Luckily for us, we had no need for the owners once the evening arrived and the rehearsal and wedding the next day went beautifully, with our guests pitching in at every turn…even watering the dry outside plants the morning of the wedding, sweeping dry weed-wacked grass that had been left around the pavilion and setting up tables and chairs. It is a large venue and we had help from wonderful family and friends, with little or no direction from the owners. Fortunately the wedding itself was magnificent and all the detailed planning by our daughter and her fiancé with their caterer from Anchorage, the local special event company that provided a large tent and extra tables, a local baker and extra service help…all paid off with guests saying it was one of the most amazing weddings they’d attended.||We did see Kathy once on the morning of the wedding and more than one of us requested that the 8 large garbage cans that she said she would provide be brought to the tented area…only to find out during the reception that only ONE can was present, leaving us to drag around the black garbage bags we’d brought to clean up every table later in the evening. ||Kathy personally called me on my cell phone at 9:30 AM the morning after the wedding telling me that she had a tour planned at the venue and to remind us that check-out time was at 11:00 AM…never even asking how the wedding had gone. I shared that we had left the grounds cleaner than we had found them and that checkout time at the house was noon and that a door to one of the rooms had become locked unexpectedly and she had never provided the bride or groom with a key or formally checked them into the house they contracted! Unfortunately things only became worse as she toured my husband around the Cedar House with accusations of cleaning needs above and beyond the $350 paid in the contract for an area rug cleaning and two other damages that we requested estimates on and two months later have none….Warning…read past reviews on this site and others about non-refund of deposits before you book this venue, or the headache we now have will be yours. There are many beautiful venues around Alaska to choose from that put their customers first and make the special occasion one to remember for the right reasons.

We have used the Alaska Sunsetview Resort for our Annual Leadership Retreat. We keep coming back because we've not found anything that compares. It works GREAT for our needs!
It's a beautiful, quiet setting, and offers a large area for our meetings, and has enough bedrooms a with bathroom in each,) for everyone to have their own privacy.

This was the perfect place for my sister's "destination wedding." Family came from all over the country, and we had an amazing time together. The rehearsal, bridal shower, wedding, reception, lodging, everything(!) stayed at this resort, and it was perfect! There was plenty of space for the wedding party to get ready and guests to hang out. I did my sister's hair and makeup and the salon was wonderful, though it isn't equipped with anything but a chair and mirror (which were perfect for our purposes). We were able to cook and serve both the rehearsal and reception at the resort. (It is a bit of a drive if you forget any ingredients.) The only bummer was that the doors kept locking people out of their rooms. Great times! Oh. steam shower... amazing!

We rented the entire venue for our daughters wedding. Which was supposed to include all the houses. Our initial contact and walk through went very well. The owners daughter seemed very sweet and helpful. We encountered a few issues along the way that should have been red flags. The property itself is beautiful. The houses would be able to fit all of our families. We all traveled to this venue. We hired a very detailed wedding coordinated thankfully who knows her stuff. We started having issues with our payments being applied to our account. So each bill we received was wrong. We had to send copies of our payments to prove what we had paid. Sometimes it would take a month before our checks would be deposited. Had to resend checks because they say they never received them. Luckily we made copies of everything. We never received the contract back signed by the owners. We had to deal with 4 different people. Each contradicting what the other said. The contract said we got two full days for the $16, 000 dollar two day rental, which we did not. I had already asked for a later check out that would be additional that I agreed to before our wedding planner brought to our attention the contract said 2 full days. I brought this to their attention and they said I already agreed to pay more. So I did !! Our final payment was due a month before the event which I tried many times to pay but was waiting on a final billing. When I did receive the final bill to my surprise it was wrong yet again and had to wait because the new A/R didn’t or wasn’t able to help me until he spoke to the owner. Needless to say we had to for the second time send them proof of all our payments. Big surprise one of the checks hadn’t been received they said. Finally got a correct bill after we sent proof of all previous payments. By this time they pointed out we were in breech of contract. They were paid the correct amount owed. Family and friends from all over the country traveled to anchorage,. Our wedding planner had a final contact with the owners only to be told one of the buildings would be off limits to us from 10:00 pm Saturday night. She of course argued it was apart of our venue, only to be threatened to cancel our wedding event entirely. Two days before the wedding. To say we were stressed is an understatement ! This was our daughters wedding. Our first in the family to get married. This should have been a stress free day. We powered through and had a beautiful day. The owners had people on site by 7am I think the last day to clean the building people ate in. We did love the property itself, however the stress of dealing with the owners made for a lot of undue stress.

Just book it! We had our wedding here and we could not have asked for a more beautiful place. So many fun things to do and just relax with those you love! The kitchen is fully stocked, the bedrooms are comfy and Heather and Kathleen are amazing!

You can easily find expensive places to stay, or dine, in Alaska. It is harder to find one that measures up to the value. The Sunset View Resort, happily, is such a place. My husband and I chose to spend our tenth wedding anniversary in their Bridal/Master suite and it was a quality experience on every level, especially considering that this was in the 'off' season. The views are indeed stunning, the entire property faces Denali and the setting sun, with Big Lake in the foreground. ||Also on the property is a delightful restaurant, the Boathouse, with a small but perfectly varied menu. The cook seemed a little slow perhaps, but the food was worth the wait; every time. That time passed pleasantly because the restaurant sits at the very edge of the lake, a wall of windows taking full advantage of the view.||All facilities were spotless and in good repair. (a plus, I've been shocked at the 'high end' places that don't keep things working and serviceable).||We are not used to the 'bed and breakfast' routine, preferring the independence and privacy of hotels, but the owners are lovely people who have obviously invested their lives and their hearts here and it was nice to chat with them about their beautiful estate.
