Agave Grill – A Disappointing Return

We first visited Agave Grill in Ajo, AZ, about seven or eight years ago, not long after it had opened. At the time, we were thoroughly impressed—not just with the food, but with the entire experience. The owner was passionate, full of energy, and eager to share his vision for the restaurant. He even sat at our table, describing in detail his process for seasoning the meat before preparing the burger patties. That enthusiasm was contagious, and our whole group left raving about the place.

Fast-forward to today, and we were excited to return, eager to see how the restaurant had evolved. Sadly, it hadn’t lived up to the dream the owner had once shared with us.

While the burger was still good, it didn’t stand out the way we remembered. The magic we once felt was missing. Service was noticeably slow, and the same man we had met years ago seemed disengaged, lacking the passion and energy that had once made Agave Grill special. Instead of the warm, enthusiastic welcome we remembered, we were met with a curt, unenthusiastic attitude.

It’s always tough when a place you once loved doesn’t live up to your memories. Agave Grill was once a standout, but on this visit, it was just another average stop. Here’s hoping it can find its spark again.

Great local joint. Very friendly staff. So laid back with that home feel. Awesome avocado burger and the home style fries were some of the best I've ever had - just the right amount of seasoning. Ajo is a jewel of a small town as well.

This bustling, informal restaurant is clearly popular with locals. We arrived hungry after a day in Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, and were grateful to be seated, given that the manager (owner?) had planned to close early due to a special event. Our party of five ordered beverages plus the salmon, burgers, a patty melt, and taco salad, and everyone found the food to be tasty and fresh. Before ordering, you might want to ask if there is a special available in addition to the mostly standard American fare listed on the menu. We didn't think to do so, but after placing our orders from the menu, we saw a delicious looking plates of Mexican food being served into carry-out containers and were told by a customer that is was the special - Mexican flautas (taquitos). We spent an average of $20 per person.

I ordered a burger. The burgers come with fries. I asked if I could have a dinner salad instead of fries. Sure, no problem. When I got the bill, I saw that I had been charged for the salad. When I brought it to her attention, she said yes, I ordered a salad. Fries were not my first choice but had I known that I would be charged for them, I would have gotten them. Due to $1.50, I’ll never be back. See you at Fat Cactus.

Grabbed some dinner here right before they closed. The inside has lots of character with local artwork, and cabin diner feel. They have a pretty great selection in their menu. I got a salad and my husband got a chicken sandwich. They are very generous with their portions, and everything we got was delicious. Highly recommend it.
Also, thank you to Eric, he took our order. He was very welcoming and friendly. Definitely will be coming back next time I'm in town.

The best burger joint in Ajo. The portions are very satisfying and the flavors are delicious. The avocado burger topped with mushrooms, pickles, red onions, and some habanero hot sauce, along with crispy seasoned fries, and an ice cold Corona and lime had me stuffed! The owner, Eric, came over to introduce himself and check on us during our meal. Our waitress was very friendly and service was fast. We definitely came at a good time! We'll definitely come back when I'm in town.

We heard the burgers were great so we picked up a couple to go on our way through Ajo. Cute place. Would love to hang out on the back patio someday. The burgers were as good as we'd heard. Thick, grilled patties with melted cheddar, crisp lettuce and all the fixings with super crispy sweet potato fries. Delicious!

WOW!!! JUST WOW!!! The food was DELICIOUS, but even more better was the service! We had a vehicle transmission die on our way through Ajo. In a group of 20, we walked in, hungry, and tired from the long border line wait on our way home. They brought delicious hot food. Then, when I asked what time they closed, they said "1 hour ago, but it's OK, you are all welcome here and we are happy to stay open and serve your family in your time of need". WOW!! They took care of us and were so friendly, and even offered my husband to stay and relax in their restaurant till his tow truck from Phoenix got there several hours later. We will stop in EVERY time we head down to Rocky Point to support our new friends. Thank you 🙏 you were an answer to our prayers today, when we were exhausted and hungry.
