The self check-in was easy. I didn’t see anyone there for my whole stay, which was very relaxing and just what I needed before an upcoming busy business trip.

The building is beautiful and the public kitchen and seating areas are nicely furnished. There were enough options that I had no problem finding something I was happy with for breakfast the two mornings I was there.

I stayed in the Denali room and it is small. I knew it would be small from the explanation; it was more cramped than I expected. I had to place my suitcase on the bed to open it. The shower stall is also small, but the water pressure is great.

There was a strong smell in my room. I can only describe it as an old house smell - it reminded me of older homes I have been in different areas of Alaska. The smell was not pleasant. I’m sure in the summer the room is aired out more, and this is not as much of a problem. I do not know if this is a problem in the other rooms.

Overall, I was very pleased with my stay.

I'm a local, I've stayed at this place multiple times now and have mixed reviews. Our first stay was in April 2024, we were in the The Alaska Suite and I really enjoyed our stay. It's a great location, competitive pricing and access to coffee and snacks is nice. However our most recent stay a week ago was subpar. The parking area was horribly plowed, the stairs and deck were EXTREMELY slippery and the room was not clean to the standard I would expect. If shoes are not expected to be taken off at the door, the carpet in the bedrooms need to be replaced. Carpet and winter boot conditions don't mix. I can only imagine the mold/mildew/grossness in the carpet. We had a 1 year old and she found many things on the floor that should have been vacuumed up prior to our stay. The rooms definitely need an upgrade. I do love that the rooms have bathrooms.

Jewel Lake Bed &Breakfast began communicating with me even before I made the reservation. They answered my questions quickly and eased my concerns. They also communicate before each stay, giving you a code and password. When we had a problem during the first stay, they again quickly resolved it the next day. When I needed luggage storage the day of checkout, they allowed it even though they had another group that had many bags. The rooms are not fancy and breakfast was just adequate, but we felt at home here after our second stay. We loved being able to prepare our dinners and to use the guest laundry.

We stayed in the Nautical room for three nights from 26 to 29 June 2024. It is spacious if you have lots of gear and that’s the only positive. The bed has no cover on the duvet and it was never made up during our stay. The mattress comes away from the headboard and the gap swallows pillows making for an uncomfortable nights' sleep. Our room carpet was stained in several places and so were the rugs in the dining room.

See the photos for the mouldy bathroom with a potentially
disastrous high step up to the toilet and the so called garden view.

It’s a self cook breakfast and to be fair the food provided is plentiful although of a cash and carry standard. When other guests are preparing their breakfasts it’s impossible to work around them. That means waiting your turn to cook and eat surrounded by the dirty pots and dishes they leave behind. There is a live camera in the kitchen/dining area so you may be filmed without having given your consent.

There is one small fire extinguisher in the basement. No fire exits are marked and no information is provided about what to do or who to contact in case of an emergency.

We never saw our hosts and they didn't reply to our email enquiries once the booking was made and paid for.

In my honest assessment the Jewel Bed and Breakfast is not a ‘home from home’ as it claims on the sign outside. I found it grubby, tired and uncomfortable. I cannot recommend it and won’t be returning.

My husband and I stayed here twice during our vacation to Alaska. We stayed the night we got in and the night we left. Both nights went smoothly checking ourselves in. The second night we showed up and our room was obviously not cleaned up yet. There had been a miscommunication. Luckily, the housekeeper was there and able to give us another room immediately which was very convenient! We slept great, the beds were incredibly comfortable and we loved that we were able to make our own breakfast and grab a granola bar on our way out. We also used the freezer to store some fish on our way out of town, and the owners were super cool about that as well. Would stay here again!
