Following PT, it was off to find breakfast. After being unable to find parking at another restaurant, it was back to being on a breakfast venture. Plan B did not disappoint. Detours can make for the best adventures.

Marcia’s Silver Spoon Cafe opened in 1988 in a building erected in 1929. The building may be old but the restaurant was very clean, and well loved. The owner of the original restaurant, which preceded it, also co-owned The Top of the Ocean. Anyone who lived in Tacoma, prior to the mid-70’s, which is when it was destroyed by fire, should have vivid memories of that beautiful waterfront structure and mirror lined ballroom.

The outside is rather nondescript, but the inside takes you right back to the 50’s style diners. We were greeted warmly as we entered and seated immediately. Coffee and water was served, along with menus. Pictures with labels of some of the meals served, are posted on the west wall. A handwritten set of FAQ’s is posted by the kitchen for those needing additional assistance when it comes to differentiating some of the menu items.

After perusing both sides of the menu, and asking for recommendations, we ordered. Ray had the chicken fried steak omelette with hash browns. I chose the two meat and cheese omelette, and sprang extra for the country potatoes, which can come with peppers and onions. I decided plain potatoes were fine by me. Wheat toast for Ray and sourdough toast for me, rounded out our breakfast order.

Our meals arrived quickly and did not disappoint!!! Ray’s chicken fried steak omelette, was huge, well loaded with large chunks of meat, and perfectly seasoned gravy. The hash browns were crispy, without being overdone, or soggy, which we both hate.

I ordered sausage and bacon as the meat choices for my omelette and it was loaded!!! The bacon was the real deal and not the chunked up mystery meat stuff which sometimes comes in bacon omelettes. I don’t know how many sausage patties were chunked up in my omelette, but the cook didn’t skimp on them. It also contained white and green onions, which complemented my omelette, and didn’t bite back, and a cheddar and Colby cheese mixture. My country potatoes were a healthy serving. I was offered onions and peppers, but wasn’t in the mood, so I declined. While my parrot is a vegetable eater, he also prefers his potatoes “naked”. He will get some tomorrow when I eat the rest of my breakfast.

While the outside of the building may look run down, and unkempt, the inside, atmosphere and food are anything but that. There was a lot of laughter and camaraderie, making our meal enjoyable. This hidden gem should not be overlooked. First impressions can be misleading. Don’t bypass the opportunity for an excellent meal which will not disappoint. This is one place where we will definitely return!!

It's tiny. You put your name and phone number on the list when you arrive then go wait in your car. I recommend checking in again because they didn't call us. The service is good. They were quick with the menu and drinks. The portions are very large. We ordered the meat lovers & egg plus a pancake 🥞. Definitely try the loaded hash browns. It's enough food to split between 2 people. You get a 10% discount if you pay cash. I've included pictures of the menu.

First time here and we arrived around 11am and we put our name on the waitlist. We were seated in 30mins.

It is a small place with limited space to move. It would pose a challenge with someone in a wheelchair. We had a toddler so they provided a high chair.

We all enjoyed our meals and they are very generous portions. Our hash browns were well seasoned and tasty!

I enjoyed the pork chops and eggs breakfast and that pork chops was well seasoned and not dry at all. Would definitely come back again despite the cleanliness of the fans/ ventilation systems right above tables. 💁🏽‍♂️

This small diner gives giant portions of delicious quality. The kind of home cooking your grandma would be jealous about. The food is made with crabs, butter, flavor, and love.
The staff are friendly and welcoming.
There is charm in the air when. You walk in.

We stopped in on a Saturday morning around 10 a.m., and surprisingly, we only waited about 15 minutes. The dining room is somewhat small but very cozy and the atmosphere was very friendly.

That all being said, the food was excellent and, in my opinion, worth the wait.

Now, the only reason reason I didn't offer 5 stars for service, comes down to my girlfriend having a shellfish allergy and the fact that this establishment couldn't assure there wasn't risk of a cross contamination hazard. She did, however, order the oatmeal, which she said was excellent. Aside from that, the service was impeccable.

If you are hungry and want a solid meal Marcia’s is the place. This is an older working diner, nothing fancy, no frills but a place that delivers huge portions of good food. I ate off the pancakes for two days after initial meal. A few tables, and counter. It packs up with eager hungry customers quickly. One staff was training a new staff member and I was impressed at how she explained things, taking time to show and say why things needed to be done a certain way. Marcia’s is a terrific spot if you want no fuss meal.
