One of the nicest, cleanest Best Western Plus we have stayed at. Super convenient downtown location with a secure parking garage (added fee but worth it). Free breakfast in the morning & free cookies at night. Right across the street from the convention center. The only downside is they only have 46 tv channels & half of those are news/sports. Right next door to a Chili's and within walking distance to quite a few bars 🍺

Here for a convention with a bunch of high school music students and it was near perfect. Rooms and public areas were clean and comfortable. Gym was reasonably well stocked with newer equipment. Everywhere we needed to be was a 5 minute walk. No indoor pool, which would have been nice but otherwise just what we needed. Special shout out to the staff who were always exceptionally friendly and helpful.

Our stay was great! Hotel was very clean, and always smelled nice. It’s a great location downtown, with the convention center across the street. The staff were all very helpful and accommodating. The garage parking is safe and secure.

I recently attempted to book a stay at the Best Western Plus City Center in Spokane using a free night certificate I won as part of a charity auction for JOYA, a local Spokane charity that financially supports families with developmentally, challenged children. The hotel  donated this night as part of a package tied to a downtown comedy show.

A week after booking, I received a call from Meredith Rainville,  the hotel manager, who informed me that they would only honor the certificate if the hotel’s occupancy was below 80%. With a large track and field event happening in Spokane, she said I’d need to pay the full price of $159 to keep my reservation. The certificate only states that it may not be available for Friday and Saturday stays, I wanted to use it in on January 23 2025, a Thursday.

I explained the situation in detail, emphasizing that this was a donation made by their hotel to support a charitable cause. Sadly, Meredith was unwilling to honor the certificate, despite knowing that the hotel had donated it in good faith. She reiterated their occupancy policy, which effectively negates the donation during high-demand times.

To put this into a financial perspective: the hotel appears from pictures online  to have about 90 rooms. At $159 per room, that’s $14,310 in revenue for full occupancy. By honoring their charitable commitment, they would have received $14,151 in revenue instead—a marginal difference in exchange for supporting the cause they initially pledged to help.

To be honest, I was already on the fence about staying here—it’s a two-star hotel (according to Google) in downtown Spokane that I’ve driven past countless times without a second thought. What ultimately convinced me not to stay was the principle: giving to charity only when it doesn’t cost you anything feels incredibly self centered, insensitive and greedy.

If you value businesses that stand behind their commitments, especially to charitable causes for children and families in need, I’d advise booking elsewhere. There are plenty of alternatives in the area, even at this price point.

Update 1/8
In response to their response.

“It costs us money to donate these rooms but we are happy to help support.”

It doesn’t cost much if you only donate rooms that are not booked and unused and it didn’t cost you anything for this donation because you won’t honor it.

“We do have limitations on some dates the certificates can be used. This is common practice in our industry. It's clearly stated on the certificate.”

The certificate only states that it may not be available for Friday and Saturday stays, I wanted to use it in on January 23 2025, a Thursday.

“For you to write a review (having never even stayed at our property) and call us self centered, insensitive and greedy on a room that we donated is simply wrong.”

You didn’t donate anything because after accepting my reservation you called me a week later and said I would have to pay full price to keep it. You just got credit for donating a room. I think you (owner/manager) are
self centered, insensitive and greedy from our interaction and your choice to not honor a donation to charity when there’s an extra $159 to be made on top of a booked out hotel. No need to stay at your hotel for this
conclusion.

Stop trying to pretend this is anything other than what I clearly stated.

We stay here as my husband receives routine medical care nearby. This Best Western has a discount for medical stays. We are older and 200 miles away round trips prove very difficult. The room is clean, and the service very good. We eat a warm breakfast and go to appointments. We get food and snacks at a market and attend movies within walking distance, even with a walker. Staying here makes the trip a little easier. We are very thankful for that!

I will begin with the positives, rooms good size and is clean and nice décor throughout the hotel. However from the moment we arrived we were “greeted” by an incredibly rude receptionist with dark hair. When I replied to my husband about a comment she made, she stopped checking us in and just stared at me for several minutes. We were told rather abruptly then that parking was limited and in further conversations when we advised we were not told this, the same woman quoted that all websites and booking agents know this - our booking did not mention this. We were told we could use the underground car park at a cost of $15 a night - but this car park has limited head space and is for compact vehicles - not big vehicles. Therefore be warned unless you are a favourite you may arrive and not get parked and there is no safe parking close by. I say this because half the car park on our last night was blocked off for a special party we were told. When I asked for a manager I was told she was a manager and that she would leave a message for her manager to talk to me, but you’ve guessed it, that never happened. Having checked in we therefore had anticipation about what our room would be like. Our room was large and clean but rather worrying when tried to open the balcony door, it had a large wooden rod on the floor to help lock it in place and the runner was filthy. Looking out of the windows we were right by a massive advertising hoarding which at night was heavily lit up and in the empty lot next door were a heap of homeless which for them seemed a safe place and was so sad to see so many, but was later uncomfortable when another member of staff told me if I was going out walking to ensure I had a cross body bag or a bag that could be strapped to me as the homeless take drugs and can turn violent!! There was also a random vehicle that would park in the street, then come park in the car park, then disappear but nothing was done. The hotel is also on an incredibly busy junction as other reviews have mentioned so unless noise doesn’t bother you, you won’t get much sleep like me. Having a balcony was pointless as far to noisy and dirty due to the volume of traffic. Breakfast was awful with limited choice and members of the public can wander in the kitchen. Whilst I know different countries have different hygiene standards it is not something that happens in my country. I also was shocked when the breakfast preparer dashed off to see a visiting dog and was playing with it, then returned to sort food without washing her hands. I have stayed in many Best Western hotels in different countries and different States and sadly because of the rude staff, the car parking, the breakfast and the fact I was told the area was unsafe, it has to rate very low. I can only be thankful I will never visit it again.
