We planned on our stay as a mother-daughter experience going to our first yoga retreat. It was more than what we expected--the community and staff were warm, friendly, helpful, caring and so interesting, each with his/her own experiences and gifts to share. We had the benefit of the alternating instruction of 2 wonderful yoga instructors with different styles, each sharing her/his philosophy and guidance. We also had the pleasure of participating in the Kirtan and the Cacao Ceremony with moving meditation (dancing!). We learned about how to meditate and mindfulness and are on our way to practicing meditation. We stayed in a yurt-style cabin that accommodated two--it was neat, clean and set away from the center of activity with a nice deck and view for relaxing. The internet service is only available in the community room but you really tend to shut off your cell phones and electronics (except for taking pictures) during your stay as this is a retreat and escape from everyday stuff. It is like a back-to-nature experience without truly roughing it (you have electricity and running water and everything is neat and clean including the compost toilets). It is also nice that you do not have to think about planning any meals or cleaning up. And the food was spectacular as each staff member added his/her own flair of culinary creativity with fresh, healthy, homegrown produce. All this is set in a beautiful, serene setting atop the foothill of the Sierra Nevada next to the South Yuba River State Park. We enjoyed the peacefulness and our lovely hikes down to the river for refreshing swims in the crystal clear river water and the more shaded trail down to the blue-green lake. Pleasant Valley Sanctuary is a highly recommended retreat in our book!

My mom and I had the best time ever at our first yoga retreat! The staff and Georgia were incredibly kind and welcoming. We were fortunate enough to be upgraded to one of the gorgeous cabins and immensely enjoyed our time at Pleasant Valley. The practices and the food were fantastic. My mom and I also enjoyed the wild blackberries found along the creek. Hoping to come back again in the near future!

My best friend and I shared a beautiful cabin with a skylight with large windows facing the valley. It was clean, quiet and extremely well managed facility. The food was delicious and cooked with love. Our instructors were excellent, tailoring the sessions to our needs and constantly ensuring we were following along. The yoga and meditation is tailored to each individual level with good instruction for a beginner and guidance for more experienced practitioners as well. After morning sessions, we also had a chance to hike and enjoy the local trails - absolutely gorgeous and refreshing. The retreat was all that we hoped for - rejuvenating for our minds, relaxing and peaceful with the right doe of adventure. Would love to go back!

Pleasant Valley is a stunning place, very calming and peaceful. I stayed in one of the two huts which are more secluded, very comfortable with my own terrace that looked out across the hills. You can also stay in tents which are placed around the land under cover which also looked very comfortable, one is even on the hill overlooking the creek and waterfall, absolutely beautiful. There is a regular bathroom and also outside solar powered showers which are wonderful, better to use in the afternoon once the sun has heated the water better. The food was delicious!! Cooked by a different staff member and introduced each day, it was mainly vegetarian and sometimes vegan but I never felt like I was missing anything being a meat eater. I was constantly asking how things were made so I can recreate it at home. Almost all of the vegetables and fruit are home grown in their organic garden and orchard.||The yoga each morning was fantastic, mainly hatha with teachings and guidance. We managed a couple of outdoor sessions but when it was too cold we reverted to the yoga and meditation studio. I missed the morning meditations most days as I'm not a morning person but the evening ones were great. After dinner each day there was something planned, discussions on meditation techniques, yoga, spirituality them followed by an hour meditation, usually guided.||The staff were also wonderful, some just there for a month or two and others living there permanently. From all over the world each bringing something useful to the community. They were all so welcoming, charming and interesting.||Aside from that there is a beautiful creek with swimming pools and a waterfall right next to the house, and beautiful walks through the Yuba River national park. I would 100% recommend this to anyone looking for a reset and reflection, or just some peace.|

I was looking for a silent meditation retreat that didn't have the luxury distractions of Esalen or the long waitlist of Vipassana. Pleasant Valley was totally and completely it. It's a small community and plot of land, but everyone is warm and helpful. There are only a few buildings, but they are well-maintained and spotless. Food was super healthy, vegan, and tasty. The activities were great -- yoga, kirtan, satsang -- but in particular the guided meditations by Simon formed the core of my experience. Highly recommended!

Attending the silent retreat at Pleasant Valley Sanctuary changed by life. The result of the retreat was a new found energy. I learned the tools to build a reservoir of peace. In times of stress I will draw on that plentiful reservoir. I really liked was their willingness to teach, the incredible food, the staff and the love they shared.

My 4 day stay at the sanctuary unveiled what is important to me and what I wish to engage in. I am so grateful for this. I spent my time at the sanctuary during January of 2013, when there is little activity, few people and a close family vibe with the inhabitants. I was apart of the 'intern' program, choosing to work 5 hours a day in lieu of money for meals, yoga training and shelter. There were 4 of us, another visitor and I, and the two permeant residents, Jamie and Naomi. I became close with each of them through our meditations, meals, construction project. The sanctuary and surrounding area attracts wonderful, dedicated, passionate and spiritual souls. I learned so much, specifically from Jamie who introduced me to several potent meditation techniques which we practiced regularly during my stay, and donated his time for spiritual discussion with me. With that, the special talks, cooking and welcomeness from Naomi; the fellow searching, open and loving energy from Becky; and our communal intention towards growth in our spiritual yogic practice, I experienced a life altering transformation at Pleasant Valley. I have come home with reenergized intentions; wanting to continue eating simpler, have a centralized meditation practice in my life, and seek a community similar to what I found at the sanctuary. All this helps me be more of who I am with lessened power from fears, addictions and distractions I encounter. The sanctuary is a beautiful, encouraging place for people to show up to the challenging internal battleground. Thank you guys for providing this much needed center!!!!!!!!!!!!
