I live in Arizona and had not seen the ocean in years. Laguna beach was recommended. We drove to the beach and parked on a road nearby.

I was disappointed. The beach didn't smell good. It almost smelled moldy and dank. Maybe all beaches smell like this, but I hope not.

The beach was free of trash and the ocean water was clear and appeared to be clean. The beach had dark sand but you could walk on it easily. There were an abundance of scuba divers and snorkelers. You definitely need a wet suit because the water was very cold. There were no lifeguards. There were cliffs and rocks to hike on. There were beautiful tidal pools teaming with life. The locals were very friendly, unlike the CA drivers which are dangerous and rude.

There is a beach town (named Laguna Beach) along the edge of the seashore a few hundred yards away. We didn't stop in the town but it was filled with an assortment of quirky stores. I can't say much about them because we went straight to the beach. The town is filled with older beach houses that are well cared for.

It may be I am just ignorant of beaches, but I cannot recommend this beach. The beach just seemed to be commercialized. My main complaint is the smell of the beach.

An excellent family beach. Clean blue water, soft sandy beach, amazing sun shine. A must visit beach particularly for Canadians when it is snowy and -20c in Edmonton and Calgary. Take a 3 hours flight from Calgary to Palm Springs CA and drive to the Dana point, Laguna beaches to +22c to +29c temperature around mid Dec to Jan. You will love it

This place is much better than Santa Monica Beach. It is clean, quiet, and has clear water. You can also see the Giving Tree. You can sit on a bench and enjoy the sea breeze and delicious food. It is worth a visit. Parking is very convenient and there are many parking spaces on the roadside. Few people know about it now, but it is estimated that more and more people will know about it in a few years.
