Hilltop Boulder Shack - Big Bear, California

This place was obviously conceived of and constructed to be an Air BnB and nothing else – no one has every lived here and it’s unlikely anyone every will (at least not on a permanent basis). So if you’re looking for a homey vibe this isn’t it; the Hilltop Boulder Shack is very chic, cool, and modern. It’s cleanly decorated, it’s very hip, and it lacks personality as a result. That said, not every space must have personality to be great, and the Hilltop Boulder Shack has its own magic.

The most impressive feature is the stunning landscape around the small house, and the well-designed outside spaces. There’s a hot tub, a fire pit, and stairs to a beautiful overlook where the owners built a small patio complete with Adirondack chairs screwed to the ground for safety. Indoors, the space is clean, bright, well laid out, design-focused, and functional for a short stay.

The kitchen was fully stocked with an array of herbs but somehow zero spices. (How does one live without red pepper flakes at the bare minimum) Other small touches, like the robes and sleeping masks, were very thoughtful and fun. Plus there’s a comprehensive guidebook to the house, the surrounding area, and local attractions.

My primary complaint is one that I have at many Air BnBs and hotels: a general lack of towels. One towel per person for the whole stay? No bath mat to keep the floor dry after a shower? Zero hand towels or wash cloths? That’s a no for me. Those small extras may seem extraneous but they can make a huge difference in the quality of a stay, especially if you’re staying longer than just one or two nights.
