I stumbled into Red's on my third day of the JMT and enjoyed the Gatorade and food immensely. The bus to get to the campground is easy to figure out, the people are helpful, and the showers and laundry made me feel like a human being again. The only thing that wasn't amazing was the hiker box - significantly smaller than VVR's or MTR's. But if you trade with the hikers around you, you'll do just fine. And there's plenty of supplies to be had in the general store, they're just more expensive than the free 99 rations in the box.

If you want to really get a taste of the John Muir Wilderness, but are not back country hikers, this is an awesome place to experience it. Our two night stay was the highlight of our trip and the operators of this establishment are very kind, friendly and helpful.

Would give them 5 stars if the restaurant served fries!! Such a great backcountry experience for those of us thru hiking! Loved the hiker cabin, showers, laundry and restaurant!

Can’t really beat .25 miles off the trail for a hot meal and general store. Prices are high, but well worth it. Breakfast burrito was great, and plenty of free coffee refills. I think $5 for a hot shower is worth it, finally felt clean after 170 miles on trail.

My wife, 15 month old son, and I spent 3 nights at Red's Meadow in July 2023 and had an incredible experience. If you're looking for a home base for hiking, running, and playing outside in the Sierra's backcountry then look no further. The cabins are rustic and bare bones, but still very comfortable -- the mattress on our bed (Cabin F) was surprisingly good and the kitchens are well supplied. We cooked most of our meals on the bonfire // grill outside and it was a treat to sit fireside at night and see the stars. The staff are all super kind, responsive, knowledgeable of the area, and it's clear that they play outside themselves and value public lands.

Several other reviews complained about price gouging but we found everything reasonably priced. $6 for a cold 24oz craft beer in the middle of a national forest is a great deal in my opinion :).

It's probably a different experience during peak season -- so we were really grateful to be staying at Red's Meadow during the first week that they opened for the season. Only note is that I wish we would have brought a grill brush.

Thank you Claudia, Patti, Joe and the rest of the staff for a great stay!

Big ants in the room. Minimal service - they’re just reopened still working out the kinks but don’t expect any major improvements anytime soon. With the shuttle running staying in town may be a better choice.

We stayed here for two nights on 8/11-8/12/22 in cabin 1. The cabin is behind the restaurant and attached to cabin 2. There is a front porch and parking in front of the cabin. There is no early (pre 3 pm) check in option.||Being located in the park is great and the staff were awesome, friendly and helpful.||The cabin was the worst place we have ever stayed. The is one electrical outlet in the bath and bedroom area, The is no fridge, fan, coffee maker, clock plastic drinking cups or a chain lock or deadbolt. There were plenty of carpenter ants.||The room (excluding the ants) was clean, the shower head is low 5 ft 5 inches or so but the water pressure is very good. The bathroom is small with no counter space.||The screen (windows front and back) were loose but we did not have any problems with flying bugs. You need to have the windows open to cool the cabin down. The first night it was noisy until 9 pm or so, the second night was quiet right after dark.||The cabin has little sound insulation so you hear your neighbor and the critters running around in the attic and walls||||We ate diner, lunch and breakfast at Red's. The food was good and excluding breakfast, we thought it was fairly priced. You order at tone window and when your name is called pick up your food at another window. You eat at, either the picnic tables around the restaurant, the ground or in your cabin. ||There is a shuttle that stops at Red's every 30 to 45 min. that can bring you to other areas in the park.||Since you are staying in the park you can drive down the road and to various stops avoiding the mandatory shuttle. The ride in and out of the park was a little scary esp. the one lane road sections.||There are A frames at Red's which may be better but we can't recommend cabin 1.
